Marketing Sigh : Can We Please Get a New Adjective for Latinos?

108523FLnk_w.jpgAy I get it already! Latinos are hot. Not just because we have money that marketers and companies want but because damn we’re caliente! Like a chile pepper. Like Salsa. Like spicy soda Dr. Pepper.

The Dr Pepper Sabrosura Art Contest entries have been narrowed down to the top 23 semi-finalists. Starting today, online voting at http://www.drpeppersabrosura.com, will determine five finalists and the grand prize winner. That one “spicy” artist will receive almost $10,000 in cash and have the opportunity to display his or her artwork on Dr Pepper packaging and promotional materials. Through the Sabrosura Art Contest, which began in October 2007, Dr Pepper encourages Latinos to express their individuality and their zest for life – characteristics that have been a cornerstone of the Dr Pepper brand for more than 30 years.

Guatemala Has a New President

Pag-16-06-11-07.jpgGuatemala swore in a new president yesterday; Alvaro Colom, a social democrat, defeated a scary army general back in November, and officially began his term with a pledge to help the less fortunate of his country:

“I thank God that Guatemala got the chance for the first time in 50 years to change to a social democratic government,” he said today after being sworn in. “I’m convinced that by giving to those who have the least, we will all have more.”

How many administrations have begun with just those words? Let’s hope Alvaro will keep his word. Guatemala faces serious issues many of which — like discrimination and violence — are age-old. On the topic of racism, Colom says he plans to govern Guatemala “with a Mayan face”.

Race Vs. Gender : Yes Again

It seems fitting that today, on the actual birthdate of Martin Luther King Jr. that I comment on the craziness that is the Hillary Clinton vs. Barack Obama otherwise known as the gender card vs. the race card. A million other bloggers whom I respect have commented on it and as a Latina woman, I guess it’s my turn. I’ve been silent on the issue not because I prefer one of the two candidates over the other but rather because I’m tired of the same bullshit that I deal with on the regular getting played out on a bigger level. Many White women in the feminist movement have long invited women of color to their table without ever coming to ours. Case in point, old school feminist Gloria Steinem’s assertion in a oft debated NYT editorial:

Gender is probably the most restricting force in American life, whether the question is who must be in the kitchen or who could be in the White House.

693918.jpgVenezuelan President Hugo Chavez and supermodel turned phone-thrower Naomi Campbell are reportedly in love. Spanish newspaper 20 Minutos — a sometimes less-than-credible source — has been reporting on this rumor for days now, and I decided to ignore it until I saw it in none other than People en Español. This chisme has gone mainstream. A web site called World Entertainment News has picked up the story too:

Supermodel Naomi Campbell is dating Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, according to odd newspaper reports in the South American country.
The British stunner recently travelled to Caracas to interview Chavez for British magazine GQ – and reporters there claim the pair are smitten with each other and have been courting for two months.
Respected El Universal journalist Nelson Bocaranda claims 53-year-old Chavez fell “head-over-heels” in love with Campbell after their interview, in which he flirted and invited the 37-year-old to “touch my muscles”.

The catwalk queen is quoted in El Universal, describing Chavez as “not a gorilla, he is more a bull”.

Anyone want to remind WTF she’s doing in Venezuela in the first place? That part of it still isn’t clear to me. Since when is she a political correspondent? If anything the presence of a fashion model might serve to help him get over his obsession with red shirts.

Anybody out there believe this rumor? Does Huguito have a softer side? Is he attempting to debunk previous (stupid) rumors about his personal life?
