Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez said today that he doesn’t consider the FARC a terrorist group and therefore should be removed from the list of international terrorist organizations:
“The FARC and the ELN are not terrorist groups, they are armies, real armies that occupy a space in Colombia. The FARC and the ELN must be given recognition. They are insurgent forces that have a political and Bolivarian project, and that is respected here.”
That was the message Chavez was sending to other Latin American governments in hopes that it wouldn’t fall on deaf ears, especially in Colombia. No such luck, as the Colombian government didn’t waste time in responding via its press secretary:
“The government of Colombia, will not for any reason accept that the title of terrorists be lifted…the government of Colombia with its army and its constitution will continue the struggle until we defeat these groups which have received the most generous offers of peace.”
Press Secretary César Mauricio Velásquez said the FARC’s actions go against basic human rights, and that they are terrorists because “they kidnap, indiscriminately place bombs, recruit and murder children, murder pregnant women, the elderly and utilize land mines, leaving thousands of victims in their wake.”

The Chicago-area city of Evanston, Illinois is looking to make itself a safe place for immigrants by blocking police and other authorities from inquiring about legal status:
The City Council’s Human Services Committee unanimously approved a draft resolution Monday prohibiting such inquiries unless it is required by law or deemed integral to a police investigation, the Chicago Tribune reported. The resolution would also have government workers and police accept a passport or consular card in lieu of a driver’s license as proof of identity.
Chicago’s NBC 5 reports that this would make Evanston the first city to be declared an “immigrant sanctuary“. That’s funny because that’s what all of the Republican candidates call New York City under Rudy Giuliani when they take jabs at the former mayor.
Other major cities that have enacted pro-immigrant policies recently include San Francisco and New Haven, Connecticut.

I feel guilty about giving any play to Miss Alba, who clearly has identity issues to work out, but she’s quoted in a British rag talking about the often lauded assets of Latina women.
“I prefer some ass,” she tells Britain’s OK! magazine. “I think women that have a body, that are feminine, with a little shake – that’s what a woman is about.”
And just who does Jessica cite as her female inspirations? Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Biel and Angelina Jolie. Not a Latina or an ass in sight.

Today marks 6 years since the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba opened with the introduction of 778 prisoners, with no names, only numbers.
The administration labeled the men imprisoned at Guantánamo “illegal enemy combatants” who were to be held until the “cessation of hostilities” in the “war on terror” — in other words, forever.
While there may very well be people imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay, the fact remains is that little is known about why the people that are there are there. U.S. citizens and the world at large are just to accept the fact that these guys are dangerous and we are to pay no mind to pesky little concepts like due process, human rights, and international law.
