Chavez Shuffles Up His Cabinet

ramon_carrizales.jpgAfter his failed referendum, Hugo Chavez is making some major changes in his administration, replacing 11 of his 27 ministers and even his vice president.

As a result, combative Jorge Rodriguez is now an ex-vice president, while soft-spoken Ramon Carrizales is the new VP. Carrizales is a former Housing Minister.

That’s Carrizales pictured at left.

Mexico’s La Jornada reports that the philosophy of the administration changes is that after 2007, a year that marked Chavez’s “socialist revolution”, 2008 should be a “a time of reflection, rectification and revitalization”.

That revitalization appears to have become a reality for 11 fired ministers — from Finance to Telecommunications to Sports — whose replacements have already been named.

This shuffle comes on heels of Chavez’s announcement that he would pardon those who led the 2002 coup against him and focus on pressing social issues.

esp-brujoportada.jpgCurious about what 2008 has in store for your favorite Latino stars? Then there’s no one better than a Mexican “warlock” — called “Mexico’s Brujo Mayor” — named Antonio Vásquez Alba for that type of info. He’s got some hot predictions for Shakira, Paulina and others:

…Vázquez Alba predicts that the marriage between Paulina and “Colate” will end this year because of the different personal dynamics in the couple.

Shakira
will continue her successful career in 2008 but will not marry her Argentine boyfriend Antonio de la Rúa as media has speculated.

tres_reyes.jpgDon’t put that Christmas tree away yet. Some of us are still celebrating! This Sunday is Three King’s Day or Dia de los Tres Reyes Magos. Strongly celebrated throughout Latin America, the day marks the Epiphany or 12th day of Christmas. According to Biblical tradition, this was the day that three kings, Melchior, Gaspar and Baltazar (one who is usually depicted as an African and in human representations, is often sadly portrayed in racist blackface) visited the baby Jesus bringing him three gifts, gold, frankincense and myrrh.

03caucus-18-600.jpgYesterday, Jennifer explained to us all what the deal was with the Iowa Caucus. This morning we have two clear winners in that caucus. Barack Obama and Mike Huckabee each won in their respective parties. The big surprise was Hillary Clinton’s coming in not second, but third place!

Mr. Huckabee won with 34.4 percent of the delegate support, after 86 percent of precincts had reported. Mr. Romney had 25.4 percent, former Senator Fred D. Thompson of Tennessee had 13.4 percent and Senator John McCain of Arizona had 13.2 percent.
On the Democratic side, with 100 percent of precincts reporting, Mr. Obama had 37.6 percent of the delegate support, Mr. Edwards 29.8 percent and Mrs. Clinton had 29.5 percent. Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico was fourth, at 2.11 percent.
