Virgin Mary Makes Another Appearance

14952374_240X180.jpg2007 was a good year for Virgin Mary apparitions. In February we got a really good one — I’d say the best of the year — when Nuestra Señora appeared on a baking pan in Houston. Then in March, she was at the border crying bloody tears. Her third (and we thought final) appearance happened on a lemon slice, again in Texas.

Now reports are in that she made another appearance on a wall in New Mexico on Christmas Eve:”

He noticed an image there. He said, ‘That looks like an image of the Virgin Mary,’” Quintana said.

She said the image appeared during a home construction mishap. Quintana said her husband was putting a special texture on the wall. The spray bottle he was using broke twice, which meant the texture couldn’t be wiped off fast enough. This is how it dried.

The family graced by Mary’s presence says they have no plans for changing the wall. I wonder what the price of admission will be.

080102_babalawos_3.jpgIf you’re like my mother or some of my tias, you don’t start your new year’s without consulting your local babalawo, commonly known as a Santeria priest (properly known as Lukumi or Regla de Ocha). Yesterday more than 1,000 Lukumi priests gathered in Cuba to release their Letra de Año”. Among the predictions include natural catastrophes, and people checking themselves against neurological, stomach, mental, and skin illnesses.

According the the letra, this year is ruled by the deities of Ogun and Yemaya, deities of iron/war and the seas/motherhood (respectively).

The Saga of Emmanuel Continues in Colombia

IMAGEN-3881346-1.jpgThe center of the drama surrounding FARC hostages has moved from Hugo Chavez and Ingrid Betancourt to a little boy known as Emmanuel. The Colombian government is saying that the FARC canceled a scheduled release of three hostages earlier this week, because they don’t have one of the promised hostages, Emmanuel. Emmanuel is the approximately 4 year old son of another hostage that was to be released, Clara Rojas. Rojas, who used to work with Ingrid Betancourt, had the boy while in FARC custody, presumably with one of her captors. Interestingly enough, little about this angle has been covered, especially the glaring possibility that Rojas was raped.
