Mother Nature Gives Her Own New Year's Fireworks in Chile

09:06 H | Topics: Chile

Volcan Llaima in the 9th region of Chile(south of Santiago) began erupting on New Year's Day. The eruption caused about 150 tourists and employees in the national park where the volcano is located.

Hundreds of people in the town of Melipeuco, the closest to the volcano, left their homes and spent the night in the open or at two shelters opened by authorities as a series of strong explosions from the volcano rocked the area during the night.
Currently the town is on "yellow alert" but no mass evacuations have yet been implemented. The Volcano last erupted in May of last year.
