In what seems to be the turning over of a new leaf for 2008, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez announced today that he will pardon those accused of leading a 2002 coup against his government.
Offering amnesty to coup members and dissidents that authorities had doggedly pursued for five years signals Chavez may try to build bridges with an opposition fresh off its first victory since he was elected in 1998.“This is a positive gesture,” said Gonzalo Himiob, a lawyer with the opposition group Penal Forum, which has accused Chavez of persecuting political rivals.
Instead, Chavez is vowing to take on social problems such as crime, corruption and inflation, as well as tackling the milk shortage problem.
I wonder if this means Chavez might also “pardon” RCTV — which he called “golpista” — and let them broadcast again. Probably not. They seem to have all but disappeared on YouTube.

The FARC hasn’t liberated their captives, but two women of Spanish and Argentine citizenship being held hostage in Somalia were freed yesterday, according to Mexico’s El Universal. The women — Argentine nurse Pilar Bauzá Moreno and Spanish doctor Mercedes García (pictured) — were both employees of aid group Doctors without Borders and were working in Somalia when they were kidnapped on December 26th, 2007.
According to the Argentine government’s spokesperson, both women are “safe and sound” and currently on their way to Spain where they will be reunited with their families.

Volcan Llaima in the 9th region of Chile(south of Santiago) began erupting on New Year’s Day. The eruption caused about 150 tourists and employees in the national park where the volcano is located.
Hundreds of people in the town of Melipeuco, the closest to the volcano, left their homes and spent the night in the open or at two shelters opened by authorities as a series of strong explosions from the volcano rocked the area during the night.
Currently the town is on “yellow alert” but no mass evacuations have yet been implemented. The Volcano last erupted in May of last year.

2 Jan 2008Things haven’t gone exactly as planned in Colombia. Three Colombian hostages held by the FARC were supposed to be home by now. But the rescue operation with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez at its head, was stalled by trust issues on both sides of the debate. with Venezuelan helicopters waiting for the final coordinates, the FARC called off the rescue mission saying that the Colombian military had been conducting operations against them. This led to Chavez pointing the finger at Colombian President Uribe and and even director Oliver Stone said:
Shame on Colombia, shame on Uribe
(He was part of a huge international contingent supporting the rescue mission).
