Is Colombiana superstar Shakira ready to walk down the aisle with her bf Antonio De la Rua? That’s what Spain’s El Pais is reporting today:
According to Uruguayan press, everything seems to indicate that they will marry in San Carlos, a Uruguayan town close to touristy Punta del Este, as the couple has been asking for information at the courthouse.
Although the exact date of the ceremony is unknown, many Uruguayan websites are already talking about the guest list. Among attendees names like Alejandro Sanz and Penélope Cruz are being heard, and these two are supposedly whom Shakira has chosen as padrinos for the wedding.
I wonder if this is fact or rumor. We’ve heard this so many times before it’s gotten hard to believe. Plus the Mexican brujo says it won’t happen.
In other news, Shakira is filthy rich.

Ralph Nader’s threatening to run for president again, even though he’s one of the reasons why we got stuck with the arbusto in the first place:
Ralph Nader, the consumer advocate who ran for president in 2000 and 2004, said he is considering another bid for the White House because he believes the current contenders aren’t standing up enough to corporate interests.“Look at the major areas of injustice, deprivation and solutions that are not being addressed by the major candidates,” Nader, 73, said in a telephone interview today. Among other issues, he cited the need for a “practical timed withdrawal” from Iraq, programs to crack down on corporate fraud and a rearrangement of the U.S. tax system.
That’s all well and good, Ralph, but didn’t you learn your lesson when you — along with the millions of people who voted for Bush — helped screw us back in 2000? Is your ego really that big that you could be selfish enough to risk doing that again?
This makes my blood boil. I’m all for opening up our system beyond the two parties — which (one more than the other) are greatly lacking on many fronts — but unfortunately a viable election between more than just Republicans and Democrats just isn’t a reality right now. So until citizens can look beyond just the two mammoth parties, Nader needs to back out.

Apparently at least 56 deportees were being sedated in a 7 month period in 2006 and 2007, without their permission and without there being any history of mental illness. While the policy of making undocumented people take psychotropic drugs won’t be done away with completely, it will now only be done as a last resort (yeah right) and agents must get a court order before administering drugs “to facilitate an alien’s removal.”
To get a sedation order from court, officials must show deportees have a history of physical resistance to being removed or are a danger to themselves.
The policy change came only after attention was drawn to the practice by a lawsuit filed by the ACLU.

After taking two years off, the Cubana songstress, Albita, performs tonight at the legendary SOB’s in NYC. Albita has recorded eight albums, seven have received Grammy nominations. Finally after she created her own record label “Angel Dawn Records” she won two Grammys for “Best Contemporary Tropical Record of the Year”.
If you’re in the NYC area, she is really not to be missed. I’ve seen her perform and she really shines in these smaller venues!

While Americans might be preoccupied with saving sea lions in the Galapagos, it seems that as a country we aren’t very concerned about our neighbors to the South. A new Zogby poll shows that in spite of the fact that there are now more Latinos than ever living in the U.S., nobody seems to care about Latin America: only 7% of the surveyed public thought Latin America was the most important region for the United States. Spain’s El Pais reports that according to this survey, the average citizen “sees Latin America negatively and through the lens of immigration”.
Which region was the most important? The Middle East, with 43% of respondents, followed by Southeast Asia with 20% and Europe with 12%.
We don’t seem to care about Canada either. Fritz Wenzel of Zogby International sums it up: “Because of the closeness, perhaps the results are surprising. It’s as if Americans were looking to the East and to the West but not North or South.”
Nope, we only seem to care when there are financial interests involved.
Interestingly, poll results show that most Americans think Venezuela has the most pull in the region. Don’t tell Hugo Chavez, it might go to his head!

30 Jan 2008Following the footsteps of Elvira Arellano is Flor Crisostomo. Flor took sanctuary yesterday inside of Adalberto United Methodist Church, the same church where Elvira stayed with her son for over a year. Flor had been ordered to voluntarily leave (how can you be ordered to voluntarily do anything) the country by the 28th after being arrested in an immigration raid in April of 2006.
“I am taking a stand of civil disobedience to make America see what they are doing,” Crisostomo said in a statement that was translated into English. Speaking in broken English, she said immigrants are not terrorists but hard-working people contributing to the economy.
“The real problem is the color and the language,” she said.

Here’s one I wish was a joke. Spain’s AmbienteG reports that a prominent gay web site in Chile, GayChile, is actually aligned with homophobic evangelical fundamentalists:
Gaychile has gone from being the premiere [LGBT] site in Chile dedicated to defending [the community's] rights to being reported for mistreatment of the gay community. It seems that its creator, Víctor Jorquera, maintains a close relationship with the Biblical Missionary Church of Paraguay, a religious group which claims to be independent of any doctrine. The influence of this institution has made Jorquera not only renounce his own sexuality but also make homophobic comments.
What did he say? Apparently, among other things, he said “From something as miserable and shameful as being gay, I became a son of God.”
As of today, GayChile.com is still online, with news updated just this morning. I wonder if Jorquera is still making money off the traffic of his “shameful” readers who don’t know he’s turned the site into a trap where he hopes to “convert” people from their “lifestyle”.
