This year, our humble online home, VivirLatino turned two years old. And VL wouldn’t exist at all if someone, 10 years ago today, hadn’t come up with the concept — or at least the term:
The word “weblog” celebrates the 10th anniversary of it being coined on 17 December 1997.The word was created by Jorn Barger to describe what he was doing with his pioneering Robot Wisdom web page.
The word was an abbreviation for the “logging” of interesting “web” sites that Mr Barger featured on his regularly updated journal.
How much has the blogosphere changed since then? According to the BBC, the year following Barger’s coining of the term there were only 23 blogs online. Now there are 70 million. And if you love or hate social networking sites like MySpace or Facebook, you have blogs to thank. They paved the way for the social sharing of information and creation of virtual networks.

Mariela Castro, the director of Cuba’s National Center for Sex Education — who just happens to be Fidel Castro’s niece and Raul’s daughter — says that homophobia in the island nation has got to stop, and that state-sanctioned homophobia in the communist government’s history needs to be recognized for what it was: a mistake. Reports Spain’s Ambiente G:
In comments made to the La Jornada newspaper, sexologist Mariela Castro stated “we have to analyze why it happened.”The niece of the dictator says that “the mistakes Cuba committed were very similar to those committed and still being committed in many countries. Cuba was a reflection of the world. The same things happened here that happened in other countries, it just transcended more because people expected that in a socialist revolution these mistakes could not have been made since it was a revolution for the empancipation of mankind.
According to Mariela Castro, “people didn’t get how these mistakes could be committed in Cuba. The ideology of the time was permeated with homophobia and prejudice. The communist parties were very homophobic. Only recently is their attitude more inclusive.”
This certainly isn’t the first time we’ve heard this, but it certainly seems to have more weight coming from a member of the Castro family. Ambiente G also reports that Mariela Castro is working on getting legislation introduced which would include stipulations, among others, for transgender rights and gay adoption.

Geno’s Famous Philly Cheesesteaks caused a stir when owner Joey Vento put a sign up saying “This is America. When ordering, please speak English.”, implying that those that didn’t speak English would be refused service. Yesterday there was a six-hour public hearing held by Philadelphia Human Relations Commission trying to determine if that sign violates the city’s Fair Practices Ordinance by discriminating against immigrants and non-English speakers. Vento refuses to take the sign down saying it’s a political statement and it’s meant to keep the line moving.

These past three days brought three separate earthquakes to Chile. This morning a magnitude-5.3 temblor struck at 6:27 a.m. near Valparaiso. Yesterday a magnitude-6.7 quake rocked northern Chile. And on Saturday afternoon, another quake rattled central Chile causing alarm in several cities, including the capital of 5.5 million people, but there were no injuries or damage.
Yesterday Chilean president Michelle Bachelet was in Bolivia along with Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva pledging to build a highway linking the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean by 2009. Relations between Bolivia and Chile have been historically strained.
