Jessica Alba is pregnant

jessica_alba33.jpgA much-hated figure here at VL, I try not to give Jessica Alba too much attention, but I’m sure you’re all interested to hear: she’s having a baby.

“I can confirm that Jessica and Cash are expecting a baby in late spring/early summer,” Alba’s publicist, Brad Cafarelli, said Wednesday in an e-mail to The Associated Press.

Wasn’t she who judged Mexican women for, according to her, “just popping out children”? She certainly didn’t waste much time after dumping her bf over the summer.

cantante_Alejandro_Sanz_ayer_durante_rueda_prensa_previa_concierto_ofrecera_hoy_Auditorio.jpgBack in October, Spanish pop star Alejandro Sanz was banned from performing in Caracas due to some “despotic” comments he made about President Hugo Chavez. It seems that the relationship between the two isn’t shaping up to get much better, as 20 Minutos reports that Sanz recently called Hugo a “dictator” at a Grammy party in Miami:

Alejandro Sanz said, during a party in Miami, that many Venezuelans are “suffering through the dictatorship” of the Venezuelan president, Hugo Chávez. Sanz made this comment at a party celebrating his candidacy to a Grammy award.

Alejandro also clarified why he accepted a Venezuelan flag and a “Chavez Sucks” t-shirt at a recent concert in Miami, and later showed them to the audience, saying: “I did what I felt. It wasn’t a joke but a criticism.”

Somehow I think this isn’t going to make getting a gig in Caracas any easier.

Acting Crazy Couldn’t Help Fujimori Avoid Jail Time

Acting the fool didn’t help former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori, who was sentenced to six years in prison and fined $92,000. The sentence actually has nothing to do with the human rights violations he so vehemently denied yesterday. The sentence is linked to him ordering the removal of sensitive video and audio tapes from an apartment belonging to the wife of his former intelligence chief.

Supreme Court Judge Pedro Guillermo Urbina found Mr Fujimori guilty of having a military aide pose as a prosecutor and search without a warrant the apartment of the wife of spy chief Vladimiro Montesinos in November 2000.
During the illegal raid, police removed dozens of boxes of videos suspected to contain incriminating evidence of corrupt practices.
The tapes, which the Peruvian media have termed “Vladi Videos”, had been secretly made by Mr Montesinos showing himself bribing broadcasters and opposition politicians.

Not surprisingly, Fujimori will appeal the sentence.

almodovar_3_121107.jpgSometimes a pairing is just so perfect that no messing with the formula is needed. Such is the pairing of Spanish director Pedro Almodovar and Spanish actress Penelope Cruz. Yesterday, at the release of an album featuring music from his films, Almodovar confirmed that he and Penelope would be working together again on a film titled, Los abrazos rotos. Preproduction on the film, described as “a different crazy sort of love story” with its style taken from U.S. black films of the 1950’s, is set to start in the new year.

Guatemala Approves New Adoption Law

capt.d9ce277f94284a60ba3f8b064d78b978.guatemala_adoptions_gua101.jpgI took some heat for my position on international adoptions in third world nations, specific to a story about Guatemala suspending international adoptions. Well yesterday Guatemalan legislators approved a new law that tightens adoptions, while allowing pending cases — mostly involving U.S. couples — to go through without meeting stricter requirements. The new requirements comply with international law, specifically the Hague Convention, that was designed to protect adopted children from human trafficking.

The Central American country sent 4,135 children to the U.S. last year, making it the largest source of babies for American families after China.
