Ninel Conde is no longer single

ninel_conde.jpgSorry guys, but Ninel Conde is officially off the market. She married boyfriend Juan Zepeda in Acapulco over the weekend in an ultra-cursi ceremony: according to chisme show La Oreja, they set three white butterflies free, and made a wish as each one flew away.

But Ninel ain’t no fool. She decided to sign a prenup before giving the “sí, quiero”, and a sign of true class, restricted guests from attending the wedding with cameras, as she has already sold the rights to a magazine.

Carlos Slim’s CompUSA folds

508599031_4c4c5ab9b1_m.jpgMexican billionaire Carlos Slim is called “El Rey Midas” in Mexico, as it seems as if everything he touches turns to gold. But that hasn’t been the case with computer superstore CompUSA, which will fold after the Christmas shopping season:

As rumored last week, Carlos Slim Helu’s U.S. electronics chain CompUSA Management Co. will close after the holiday. Liquidator and restructuring firm Gordon Brothers Group LLC agreed to purchase the assets of the troubled Dallas-based retailer, which closed half of its stores in February. No financial details were given, but Boston-based Gordon Brothers is expected to find a buyer for CompUSA’s 103 store locations, e-commerce unit and its tech support business.

According to the Dealscape blog, over 100 CompUSA stores were closed in February. And while Slim and his guys chalk up the failure to competition from big box stores like Best Buy, anyone who’s visited a CompUSA store lately can tell you that from the terrible customer service to the non-competitive pricing to its archaic website, this business lost its relevance a while back.

Monday Morning Univision Republican Debate Hangover

9:09 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Miami| Politics| TV · 2 Comments

10 Dec 2007

Ever wake up a morning after and say to yourself, ” Why the hell did I do that last night?”. That’s what I’m saying to myself this morning after having wasted an hour and a half of my precious life on the Univision Republican debate. Why a waste? Well besides the fact that nothing surprising was said (ok I was a bit surprised at the blatant homophobia). I went into the debate waiting for the obvious racist moment when it hit me. Duh, they know we’re (Latinos) are listening. So in between telling undocumented people to go home they threw in God, compassion, and love. What Latino is going to say no to God, compassion, and love. Hearing all the anti-Chavez, Castro rhetoric, reminded me, that even though the Republicans (minus one) knew we were listening, they also tailored their answers for the Cuban exile community not for me or my kind of Latino. And it seems that much of the Spanish language media didn’t pay the debate any mind, at least not in NYC, where the newspaper front pages are more about our day to day reality, like some kids in Washington Heights who were brutalized by police.

I was also surprised by the constant reference to El Salvador and President Reagan’s intervention there, as if that was the foreign policy model to follow. Were they suggesting that the U.S. should fund opposition parties in Latin America. That the U.S. should support death squads? Oh wait. I think they do that already.

Most Latinos were like my partner, who went into the other room to watch the Mexican soccer final, while I listened to nothing new being said by Republicans, no matter how it was translated.
