An innovative new media project called “Our City, Our Voices: Immigrant Newscasts in the Digital Age” is giving Latin American immigrants in Philadelphia the media tools to tell their own stories.
Through this project, people from Mexico to Chile, working as carpenters, cooks, laborers and nannies, and ranging in age from 16-60 will begin the process of creating mini-documentaries. The common denominator amongst these new media makers is to illustrate the challenges and hopes of leaving your home and living in a place that does not know your history.
The program trains immigrants to use the web, as well as offering them the tools — internet access and a computer — to get online and tell their stories through new media and video.

Hot on the heels of two previous murders this week, the grupera world is mourning the loss of José Luis Aquino Lavariega, trumpet player for the band Los Condes. Mexico’s El Universal reports that José Luis was found dead near the city of Etla, Oaxaca, where he was visiting his family. Police are calling the killing an “ajuste de cuentas” — “a settling of the score”.
Earlier this week Zayda Peña, an onda grupera singer, was murdered in her hospital room in the border town of Matamoros. 24 hours later another musician, Sergio Gómez, was found dead along a highway in Morelia, Michoacán.

25 year old Cubano- Americano Daniel Rene has lot going for him right now. He’s been singing for years, first with MDO, an incarnation of the Menudo franchise and now he’s released his second solo album Adicto. He writes songs, so well apparently that one song he helped write was nominated for a Grammy. And his beautiful face (he reminds me of a hot Cuban ex I once had) and acting skills are on the Telemundo novela Pecados Ajenos. Daniel Rene was gracious enough to take some time out of his busy promo schedule to talk to la Mala about what he’s an adicto of, why he sings in Spanish, and strip clubs. Yes, strip clubs. Check out after the jump for notes from my interview and a video of Daniel Rene for the song off his album, Por Ti, Para Ti.

In an interview yesterday with AP, Bolivian President Evo Morales said that upon losing a recall referendum he is currently proposing as an out of the current crisis in the South American country, he would call immediately for new presidential elections. But what’s good for the goose, as they say, is also good for the 6 out of 9 governors who have rallied against Morales and his proposals that would redesign the government and redistribute land.
