CineDulce Brings (mostly) Latino Shorts to You

10:15 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Internet|Movies · Comments Off

20 Nov 2007

Because I need more ways to procrastinate online, the executive directors of the NY International Latino Film Festival have created CINEDULCE.

CINEDULCE is an online platform for watching Latino and Urban short films in your casita (or shhhh from work). The films presented on the website are just as diverse as our community, representing stories and perspectives that aren’t often reflected in mainstream cinema.

Check out more at Cinedulce.

Pancho-151XS.jpgChances are you’ve heard Argentino guitarist Francisco Pancho Navarro before and not even known it. Who hasn’t heard the haunting soundtrack of the film Frida? Maybe you like the 2006 Rolling Stones remake of I’m Free? Pancho has backed the likes of Celia Cruz, Victor Jara, and even Paulina Rubio. At long last , today he released his first solo cd, aptly titled “Sweet Guitar” .

hugo_chavez_fascist_peronist.jpgWhile the world is still reeling from the uncomfortable confrontation between Spain’s King Juan Carlos I and Hugo Chavez, it seems the Venezuelan leader might not heed the advice of the King but will listen to the call of nature. Reuters, in a more frisky than usual dispatch from Caracas, writes:

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez would not shut up for Spain’s king but, over the weekend, he heeded a higher calling to stop talking — his bladder.

Surrounded by a throng of reporters at an OPEC summit in Saudi Arabia, the president, who enjoys the media spotlight and often answers questions at length, excused himself.

“Look, I have to go,” Chavez said in comments aired on Venezuelan state television. “For a while now, I have needed to go to the bathroom and I am going to pee … Do you want me to pee on you?

You have to love blogging this beat because Mr. Chavez does all the work for us. I couldn’t possibly come up with something more entertaining for you to read than the last line of his quote. And I assume the answer was an resounding “no”, as he quickly fled the scene and whizzed off to the servicios.

Mrs. Wilson Meet Sra. Garcia

7:57 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · society · Comments Off

20 Nov 2007

Garcias.jpgOoooh Mr. Wilson! Your neighbors are more likely to be the parents of Diego the menace and not Dennis. According to a new Census Bureau analysis among the 10 most common last names in the U.S. are now Garcia and Rodriguez.

Garcia jumped from No. 18 in 2000 and Rodriguez moved up from No. 22 in 2000. And Martinez nearly ousted Wilson for 10th place.
The study, only the second ever conducted by the Census Bureau, found that while Smith remains the most popular surname, Latino surnames are increasingly edging out historically common Anglo names. The number of Latino surnames in the top 25 doubled to six, the study shows.

The Grammy award-winning Spanish pop group La Oreja de Van Gogh (called badly dressed by some and fingernails on the chalkboard [see video for evidence] by me) is splitting up:

The singer of the Donostia group says “everyone who follows me and loves knows that this has been the most difficult decision of my life. The 11 years I’ve spent in La Oreja de Van Gogh and everything I have lived with them will always been in my heart and in my mind, but I felt that this is the moment to begin a new stage in my life, starting a solo career, which is both exciting and scary for me.”

While official headlines say the group is splitting, the rest of the members are actually set to release an album, sans singer Amaia Montero, in 2008.

IMA0000550000001508.jpgTwo very famous musical groups of feline nomenclature — Los Tigres del Norte and Jaguares — came together to give a voice to the plight of immigrants all over the world at the closing ceremony of the Universal Culture Forum 2007, which took place in Monterrey, Mexico last night.

Los Tigres performed their songs related to immigration, such as “Jaula de Oro” and “Paisano” along with Jaguares before an audience of over one hundred thousand people after the closing of a series of workshops on the topic of immigration.

The show was free to the public, but organizers were asking for a voluntary donation, which will be donated to the Mexican Red Cross to help support their assistance efforts in Tabasco, where thousands have been left homeless as a result of serious flooding.

Remember Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the self-proclaimed legitimate president elect of Mexico? Well yesterday after a rally in his support, Lopez-Obrador followers ran into Mexico City’s main Roman Catholic cathedral, saying that church officials purposely rang the church bells earlier and louder than usual, in order to drown out the Lopez-Obrador rally.

Videos show the Obrador supporters running in the church screaming and jumping over pews that parishioners pushed in front of the oncoming crowd to prevent their entrance. The Sunday noon mass was slightly delayed because of the charge.

Chavez to Develop Peaceful Nuke Program

4:37 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Controversia|Venezuela · Comments Off

16 Nov 2007

chavez.jpgNukes and peaceful usually aren’t two words that go together but don’t tell that to Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez who yesterday told a French TV channel that Venezuela, just like Iran, is launching a peaceful nuclear program.

“We are with Iran, and I do not think Iran is manufacturing atomic bombs,” said Chávez. “Iran is developing nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, I am sure about that. Venezuela is also beginning to develop nuclear energy with peaceful purposes, just like Brazil and Argentina.”

Lou Dobbs for Presidente

2:37 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Controversia|Politics|TV · Comments Off

16 Nov 2007

cnn_lou_dobbs.jpgWannabe Latino Lou Dobbs is considering a run for president. Seriously. There are lots of conditions for the run to become official, like if billionaire NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg first enters the race as a third-party candidate. Oh yeah and over my dead body. Like this man needs another platform to spew his hate from?
