Celebrate! CHiPs star Erik Estrada is taking time off from making infomercials selling real estate to play cop again.

Erik Estrada is in Muncie, Indiana this week for training to keep up the reserve police officer status he earned as part of the canceled CBS reality show “Armed & Famous.” “And I hope, 30 or 40 years from now, God willing, that when it’s time to put me in my grave, I’ll go in my Muncie uniform and badge,” he said. Estrada will spend the week participating in various training events and will ride with officers again while on duty, said Police Chief Joe Winkle. He said an eight-hour monthly service requirement would be waived for Estrada.
After filming for “Armed & Famous” wrapped, Estrada also received deputy status with the sheriff’s department in Virginia’s Bedford County.

Hate Crimes Against Latinos Up

immigration.jpgThink that the anti-immigrant rhetoric doesn’t impact the everyday lives of Latinos? Think again.

The FBI released its latest national hate crime statistics last week, and while these numbers are shaky they do indicate hate crimes directed at undocumented immigrants — and Latinos in general — are up 35% over the last four years.

Shaky stats aside, most Latino activists and community workers know that overwhelmingly, many hate crimes are never reported and even when they are, getting those crimes labeled as “hate crime” is a whole other hurdle to jump.

Jail denies mom right to feed her child

812-1127souza.embedded.prod_affiliate.57.jpgA North Carolina jail is denying a Brazilian woman held in the facilities the right to pump breast milk for her 2 month old baby in spite of the fact that the child is rejecting formula and becoming ill:

Ezequiel Oliveira, who is helping care for the woman’s two children, said he spent hours at the jail Monday trying to get a breast pump to 29-year-old Danielle Ferreira. He said Ferreira’s baby, Samuel, is crying incessantly and keeps spitting up baby formula.

“We give him formula and put in the pacifier but he is crying day and night, day and night, all the time,” Oliveira said.

Jail officials say they can’t discuss conversations inmates have with medical staff, but are aware of the situation. In general, spokeswoman Julia Rush said, inmates are not allowed to express milk without a court order. She said mothers are treated for symptoms when they must abruptly stop nursing.

According to the Charlotte Observer, Ferreira was picked up on a shoplifting charge after her brother hid a CD in her baby stroller without her knowledge on a visit to a local mall. She is currently being held because she is undocumented. The Observer points out that “U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement formally adopted guidelines that allow pregnant women or nursing mothers to be released under supervised conditions” but I guess that doesn’t apply to state or municipal jails.

bernal_luna.jpgWhile Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna have been working together on human rights causes and film production projects, it’s been a moment since we’ve seen this Mexican duo together acting. Well wait no more. They will star in the Carlos Cuaron (little bro to Alfonso who directed them in Y Tu Mama Tambien) flick Rudo y Cursi. The film is about two professional soccer playing brothers.

I can’t wait!

immigranthealth.jpgAnti-immigrant advocates are going to need a new line because, according to a new study, saying that undocumented immigrants are a strain on the health care system just isn’t true. Yesterday researchers from the University of California’s School of Public Health released findings that demonstrated that most undocumented immigrants don’t have a primary care provider but that they also, contrary to popular belief, don’t visit emergency rooms any more often than U.S born Latinos.

Still got mashed potatoes? Make taquitos

285824337_1d73ee8ff7_m.jpgWelcome to Jen’s kitchen, where nothing gets thrown away. Last week I told you what you could do with that leftover Thanksgiving turkey, and now I’m showing you what you can do with those mashed potatoes, which are just days away from turning colors. Think you want to throw them out? Don’t. Make taquitos!

Now most Americans don’t get the carb-on-carb obsession found in many Latin American cuisines. A few good examples are: Pambazo (a Mexican antojito consisting of bread with potatoes inside and deep fried), quesadilla de papa, and the matter at hand: taquitos de papa. Frequently found in weekend tianguis and at street fairs in Mexico (and also known as tacos dorados), these puppies are delicious. And as with many a Mexican antojito, they are only as good as their toppings.

Now I’m not gonna get all fancy with this recipe, because I don’t know how much leftover mashed potatoes you have. Just use common sense and nobody gets hurt.

This week in “Por qué no te callas?”

teeshirt2.jpgFour little words that changed Hugo Chavez’s life forever. Not tired of “Por qué no te callas?” yet? Neither are we. News you can use:

Haters of Hugo Chavez in Venezuela have embraced a new slogan for their cause — one coined by the King of Spain: “Por qué no te callas?”

Hugo Chavez has “frozen” relations with Spain until the King begs his pardon for “Por qué no te callas?” Spain wants an explanation, and Venezuela’s ambassador to Spain counters Hugo’s comments and attempts to save face.

A bar in Seville, Spain, has created the “Por qué no te callas?” tapa, consisting of salami and ham, topped with a Spanish flag. Burp.

The alleged incident took place before Ms. Rivera was declared a finalist. According to today’s El Diario – La Prensa, Rivera’s bag, with her gowns, makeup, and credit cards was also stolen.

Government Drops No Match Defense

ss.jpgThe Department of Homeland Security is backing off its No Match program that was challenged in a San Francisco Federal lawsuit.

The rule, part of the Bush war on illegal immigration, would have forced employers to fire workers within 90 days if their Social Security information could not be verified or face potential prosecution for knowingly hiring illegal immigrants.

Leftover turkey? Make Chilaquiles

chilaquiles-200x179.jpgAre you dreading the endless stream of turkey sandwiches you’re envisioning for the next weeks? If so, turn that leftover bird into something a bit more exciting. Last year we gave you a recipe for Turkey Enchiladas Suizas that wasn’t half bad, but this year I’ve got something even easier. Chilaquiles rojos con pollo are super easy to make and the the best part is that half of the work is already done: the “pollo” is your already cooked turkey leftovers. Check it out:

Jen’s Leftover Turkey Chilaquiles Rojos

Ingredients:
10 corn tortillas cut into triangles (or if you’re lazy, tortilla chips)
1 cup chicken broth
3 large tomatoes
5 chiles serranos (or more, or less, depending on how hot you want the sauce to be)
1/4 onion (thinly sliced or chopped)
3 cloves garlic
Salt to taste
Queso fresco
Crema
Cilantro, a few sprigs
Leftover turkey (previously stripped from bones, then shredded or chopped)
