Mrs. Wilson Meet Sra. Garcia
Ooooh Mr. Wilson! Your neighbors are more likely to be the parents of Diego the menace and not Dennis. According to a new Census Bureau analysis among the 10 most common last names in the U.S. are now Garcia and Rodriguez.
Garcia jumped from No. 18 in 2000 and Rodriguez moved up from No. 22 in 2000. And Martinez nearly ousted Wilson for 10th place.
The study, only the second ever conducted by the Census Bureau, found that while Smith remains the most popular surname, Latino surnames are increasingly edging out historically common Anglo names. The number of Latino surnames in the top 25 doubled to six, the study shows.
While immigration is largely responsible for this growth, there is now less pressure for immigrants to Anglicize their last names. Mrtinez doesn't have to be Martin.
And for those who still like to think that the founding fathers were fathers to only white children (and negate their role in slavery),
