chavez.jpgNukes and peaceful usually aren’t two words that go together but don’t tell that to Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez who yesterday told a French TV channel that Venezuela, just like Iran, is launching a peaceful nuclear program.

“We are with Iran, and I do not think Iran is manufacturing atomic bombs,” said Chávez. “Iran is developing nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, I am sure about that. Venezuela is also beginning to develop nuclear energy with peaceful purposes, just like Brazil and Argentina.”

cnn_lou_dobbs.jpgWannabe Latino Lou Dobbs is considering a run for president. Seriously. There are lots of conditions for the run to become official, like if billionaire NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg first enters the race as a third-party candidate. Oh yeah and over my dead body. Like this man needs another platform to spew his hate from?

Barack Obama is going after California Latino voters through mini online Spanish language novelas. Using You Tube and the website, Tu Voz, Tu Voto, the little films are just as poorly acted out as real life novelas. They also rely on the same zero sum stereotypes about what choices Latinos have. The Ortiz family (no relation) here basically is telling other Latinos to choose between voting and marching, instead of highlighting how both are weapons.

I have to see the rest of the episodes but as a Latina, I’m a little offended at being told their is one path and one path only towards change and action.

March Against Hate Crimes in DC Today

Today, Al Sharpton and his National Action Network are holding a march down Washington DC’s Freedom Plaza against race based hate crimes. He told the Amsterdam News:

“We give people a false image that everything is well with the world. We relieve them of the burden of dealing with the record of injustice by containing our outrage.”

Heading the march will be friends and family of New York police shooting victimSean Bell, Mychal Bell of the Jena 6, and rape and beating survivor Megan Williams.

I hope that Latino victims of hate crimes are also included in the march.

Sweep of Los Angeles Mara Salvatruchas

16 Nov 2007

maragang.gifA joint effort between the Los Angeles Police Department, Salvadorian authorities and the FBI led what is being called one of the biggest street gang crackdowns in Los Angeles.

Seized during the search for 60 suspects: guns, drugs and $40,000 in cash. But the biggest catch of all: “Oscar Chacon.” Though the name is likely an alias, the FBI identifies him as the shot-caller for the notorious Mara Salvatrucha gang, known as “MS-13.”
Chacon’s street name: “Little Man,” a Salvadoran national who had been deported at least once, but returned illegally. He was one of dozens taken into custody Thursday morning at five locations.Recent sweeps have targeted MS-13 members in North Hollywood, Rampart District, and Pico-Union.

While some in the Los Angeles area say they are sleeping safer tonight, the LAPD seeks other allged gang members. Previous crackdowns against suspected members of the MS-13 in other states often led to accusations of racial profiling against Latino youths.
