New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer lost his will to push forward with a proposed plan to to issue driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants.
“I have concluded that New York state cannot successfully address this problem on its own,” Spitzer said at a news conference after meeting with members of the state’s congressional delegation.
The plan was unpopular with many because they felt that it would be a means for wannabe terrorists to get ids.
Of course it should probably be noted that ids or lack thereof didn’t stop other terrorists and I am of the belief that anyone who wants to engage in an act of terrorism will find a way to do so. Instead, What Spitzer’s lack of will does is keep undocumented immigrants living at the margin of society, forcing them to seek illegal means to earn a living and survive.
Spitzer’s attempt to make people happy about the issue failed, even when he proposed to create three distinct types of state driver’s licenses: one “enhanced” that will be as secure as a passport; a second-tier license good for boarding airplanes; and a third marked not valid for federal purposes that would be available to illegal immigrants and others.
