Hips Don’t Lie, In Fact They Make You Smarter

hips.jpgDespite my fairly lean frame, I’ve always been caderona, hippy. I remember being fitted for a graduation dress and hearing my great-aunts mumble under their breaths about just how much fabric they would need to get around my hips. Well if a new study is right, then I can thank my beautiful hips for my being so damn smart.

A bizarre new study out finds a link between women’s figures and their IQ . Results show women with hourglass figures tend to be smarter and have more intelligent kids. Scientists claim it has something to do with omega-3 fatty acids and a woman’s waist to hip ratio.

This is especially good news for us Latinas who usually have sported big hips and have been told for so much of our history that we aren’t beautiful and that we’re dumb. Think of this study, true or not, as biological proof that maybe Latina women are superior.

Dr. Lassek came up with the “waist to hip ratio” divide the waist size by the hip size. The smaller the number, the smarter the woman. Take J-Lo for example, with a waist of 26 inches and hips of 39 inches, the result is pretty low, and according to the study, pretty smart. Researchers believe its because of omega-3 fatty acids which gather around fuller hips and thighs.

This one is a stretch for me…I used to think hips were for better childbirth and that too didn’t seem to stick. I’ve seen well curved women have an incredibly difficult time pushing that baby out some ending in C-section and others with very slender hips push them out so fast that didn’t make it to the hospital. I for example have very low hip to waist ratio (xs) and had very easy deliveries AND two very gifted children both independent readers by the time they turned 5!!! That is roughly right before they started kindergarden. As a matter of fact they met all of the major milestones early are completely healthy and thriving in every way. To tell you the truth, I always did want nice curvy hips—they are beautiful—but that’s just not the way God made me and I truly believe it has no connection to the power of my brain. I think these scientists had some really big hips along with a huge imagination so as to stretch the truth that much.
