Latin Grammy Awards 2007 : Pre-Telecast

Yours truly got all dressed up for the Latin Grammy awards, even the part that they don't show on television, the pre-telecast, where about 90% of awards are given out. And I'm not just talking about catagories for designing the cover of your favorite cd, I'm talking good music here like salsa, merengue, cumbia, rock, alternative, flamenco, samba and I could go on and on but I'll let the categories speak for themselves as I go through them.
Vos Veis, whose nomination I wasn't exactly excited about, ended up winning two awards. One for their heartwarming (if you like that sort of thing) video navideno, Ven a Mi Casa esta Navidad and the other for Best Children's Album, Como se Llega a Belen. Vos Veis is the first Venezuelan group to win a Latin Grammy, ever! So big ups to Venezuela. Backstage the band said that they were working on a more poppy/rock record.
Best Long Form Video went to Ricky Martin : MTV Unplugged. Who didn't see that one coming? The press wouldn't see Ricky though till way later.
I don't listen to Christian music (sorry) but I just had to do a little write up about the winner in the category of Best Christian Album in Portuguese. Aline Berros won her third Latin Grammy with this category and she was lovely and gracious backstage with us, the press. Pero mujer. Seriously . I just had one question for her. WWJSAD? What would Jesus say about that dress? It was so ugly it was bordering in sinful.
I was thrilled, thrilled, thrilled to see Ojos de Brujo win Best Flamenco Album for Techari. Ramon, who came to represent the band, was thrilled too, especially since, as he said, they do everything all for themselves and by themselves.
Latin Grammy Person of the Year, Juan Luis Guerra, took home a Latin Grammy for Best Tropical Song. He would be the last artist to speak to the press at the end of the telecast.
>Best Rock Album by a Group or Duo went to Panamenos Rabanes (whom I love) They looked smashing in their plaid suits. See for yourself.
Best Grupero Album went to Grupo Bryndis.
What really surprised me was the number artists who didn't show up to get their awards and speak to the press, especially compared to last year's Latin Grammy Awards. Were they all busy on tours like Gustavo Cerati, who won Best Rock Song? Or was their absence an act of protest for not being included in the regular telecast? The following are the winners whom I would have liked to see.
Best Singer Songwriter Album Caetano Veloso.
Best Salsa Album: El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico
Best Contemporary Tropical Album : Oscar D'Leon
Best Rock Solo Vocal Album: Fito Paez
Best Alternative Song: Manu Chao
Best Latin Jazz Album: Arturo Sandoval
Next Up : The Winners from the Telecast.

I know that you had fun. Los Rabanes are from my dad's hometown...cool! I started to watch the show the other night to see you on tv but I fell asleep. :-(
