5 Nov 2007Love in the Time of Cholera is my favorite Gabriel Garcia Marquez book (in spite of Oprah’s book club ). The trailer certainly entices me to see the film and I love the Shakira song in the background.

We all know that Christina Aguilera hasn’t just been eating too much Ecua food, just like we know Jennifer Lopez hasn’t been scarfing alcapurias. Cristina has finally confirmed that she’s pregnant.
Speaking at her Beverly Hills home in her pyjamas with her husband Jordan Bratman and her dogs, the chart-topper said she had only one New Year’s resolution for 2008. “That’ll be about the time I enter into mommyhood, so” she whispered, “I’m hoping to have started a beautiful family with my husband!” The singer told Glamour magazine.
The magazine hits stands later this week.

Yesterday morning I was watching Like It Is and there was a discussion about the World Bank and how misleading the name is. While the idea of the bank, created post-World War II, was to help nations in debt, all nations, the fact is that the United States, controlling about 51% of the bank, has turned it into a way to bully nations, especially nations of color. By pushing conditions onto countries needing money (like forcing Tanzania to charge people for hospital visits) the money is by no means strings free. With this in mind, Latin America, and not just Hugo Chavez and friends are creating an alternative to the World Bank and like entities.

5 Nov 2007Voz Veis, Como se llega a Belen, Best Latin Children’s Album .
They are also nominated for Best Short Form Video, also on the Navidad tip.
I’m biased against Christmas music being nominated for major music awards but also maybe I’m annoyed that with Halloween just finishing, already I’m seeing Christmas being pushed heavy in the stores.

Álvaro Colom beat out an army general proving that Latin American countries want more than just un gran macho to lead them. It doesn’t get less macho than this guy. At least that’s how the U.S. media is painting him. I mean seriously, the New York Times couldn’t find a more flattering pic?
Álvaro Colom is a business man who focused on Guatemala’s poverty throughout the campaign.
Colom himself said that vote was more about saying ‘no’ to the perpetuation of Guatemala’s militaristic history.
