Everyone wants a piece of Antarctica — including Chile

4:19 pm By Maegan La Mala · Chile|World · Comments Off

24 Oct 2007

350910828_07d774bdf5_m.jpgThere was a time when Antarctica was considered nothing more than an unlivable no man’s land of no special interest to any state. But just like with any formerly unwanted territory where resources such as oil are found, now countries are staking their claims left and right. Just last week Britain announced that it will be exercising its right to claim, under a U.N. treaty, Antarctic ocean shelf up to 350 miles off its shores. And now Chile wants a piece of the action. Reports AP:

Foreign Minister Alejandro Foxley said Monday that Chile was planning to file a similar claim to extend its Antarctic territory but expected that negotiations between countries with stakes in the region would follow.

“No one can affect the rights Chile has on Antarctic territory,” Foxley told reporters. He noted there is a May 2009 deadline for filing a claim before the U.N. Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf. “We have plenty of time,” he said.

Chile and Britain aren’t alone in wanting a piece of the Antarctic pie. New Zealand, Russia and Spain, among others, have already registered claims.

Bush to Issue Warning On Cuba Power Shift

11:58 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Cuba|Politics · Comments Off

24 Oct 2007

bush_phone_upsidedown.jpgPresident Bush can’t define the word sovereignty, so it comes as no surprise that he is messing in the affairs of another country, yet again. The U.S. pres is planning to issue a stern warning (much like a father would) today to Cuba, that the United States will not accept a political transition in Cuba in which power changes from one Castro brother to another, rather than to the Cuban people (meaning the Cuban people that agree with Bush policies and certain interventions by the U.S.).

Shakira’s suegro in trouble

7:03 pm By Maegan La Mala · Argentina|Justice|Politics · Comments Off

23 Oct 2007

Fernando_de_la_R%C3%BAa_-_con_bandera_-_2001.jpgThe iron fist of justice is coming down on former Argentine president Fernando De la Rúa (a.k.a. Shakira’s boyfriend’s dad) and the charges are anything but light: five counts of manslaughter and injuries to hundred of protesters, for starters.

Though it’s not yet a formal indictment — the courts are still trying to ascertain who was responsible for the acts of repression which left citizens dead or injured in December 2001 — Argentine judge Claudio Bonadío has ordered the 6.2 million dollars of De la Rúa’s assets be frozen.

According to Reuters, if the case is approved by a higher court it will go to trial. It will be interesting to see, if that does happen, whether or not Antonio De la Rúa, a close advisor to his father, will also be asked to testify.

Guardian Angels to patrol Mexico City

12:06 pm By Maegan La Mala · crime|mexico|society · Comments Off

23 Oct 2007

22guardians-190.jpgThe other day as I walked around downtown San Francisco I was reminded that the Guardian Angels — those groups of beret-sporting urban watchdogs I remember from my childhood — are alive and well, and still patrolling our streets. And as part of Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard’s plan to clean up the capital city, the Angels are off to D.F., where they will be watching the streets of the Centro Historico, the city’s historic center and tourist destination for many visitors which has been plagued by petty crime throughout the years.

The Angels that will be working in Mexico City aren’t a Mexican offshoot but are from U.S. According to Mexico City’s La Jornada, they will be paid by the tourism sector and will assist English-speaking visitors to the city. On a rather strange note, La Jornada reports that the Angels will also report “outsiders to the commmunity” to the authorities. Indeed, the headline in the paper translates roughly to “Foreigners to report the presence of ‘outsiders’ in the community”. Hmm…

Not everyone is happy with the impending arrival of the Angels. Some politicians aren’t sold yet, and want clarification that the group will be there to also train Mexican citizens and not “carry arms or assume the role of police,” reports La Jornada.

Prince William County Losing Latinos : Documented and Not

10:18 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Controversia|Immigration|Virginia · Comments Off

23 Oct 2007

When Prince William County, Virginia passed an anti-immigrant measure earlier this month, a wave of Latinos began moving out of the county. And it’s not just undocumented Latinos. A climate of fear has permeated the county causing one-way U-haul rentals to go up and business at a money transfer store to go down. Schools teaching English have lost 80 percent of their students. Locals say that those who haven’t moved out , don’t dare step outside.

What a way to live.

Juanes’ La Vida es un Ratico

8:31 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Music · 3 Comments

23 Oct 2007

ShowLetter.jpgToday the much anticipated new Juanes album, La Vida es un Ratico, is out. The first single off the album, Me Enamora, has been breaking all sorts of records, holding a top spot for weeks in a row in the U.S. and at least 13 other countries.

I’ve been listening to the new album with my morning coffee and Juanes’ sound on la Vida is refreshing and different from his previous albums. I would say its not as dancy but rather shows a more mature Juanes with strong rock and even reggae influences. Juanes even gets political with a song about land mines, Minas Piedras, an issue he’s been working on for a while now.

My favorite song from the album, this morning Tres has me moving my hips.

So go and check out Juanes because la Vida really is un ratico no mas and shouldn’t we fill it with good music?

P.S.- Someone needs to tell iTunes that Juanes is not in the genre of reggaeton and hip hop.

133892005_8625ba43d8_m.jpgAh, it seems like it was just yesterday when El Potrillo was nothing but a little potrillito (or something like that). But now Alejandro Fernandez is all grown up and is already celebrating his 15th year in the music business. To mark such a momentous anniversary, Ale is giving 5 special concerts at Mexico City’s Auditorio Nacional next month:

The concerts will take place between the 21st and the 27th of November, and will form part of his tour “Viento a favor” which corresponds with his latest album of the same name, which after only a few months has sold more than half a million copies worldwide.

The Mexico City shows will conclude the North American leg of Alejandro’s tour, which will continue on to Central America and later South America.

Today in History : Cuban Missile Crisis

12:38 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Cuba|history|Politics · Comments Off

22 Oct 2007

cuban_missile_580x.jpgToday in 1962, then President J.F.Kennedy goes on television and informs the world that the Soviet Union has placed missile installations in Cuba, only 90 miles from the American mainland. Since and forever after, Cuba has become the little big bad red wolf all people in the U.S. are to fear and hate. My mother told me stories about drills she went through in school, hiding underneath her desk (because that was gonna protect them). The report allegedly put most of the eastern seaboard and southern United States within range of Soviet nuclear warheads.
