Shakira’s suegro in trouble

Fernando_de_la_R%C3%BAa_-_con_bandera_-_2001.jpgThe iron fist of justice is coming down on former Argentine president Fernando De la Rúa (a.k.a. Shakira’s boyfriend’s dad) and the charges are anything but light: five counts of manslaughter and injuries to hundred of protesters, for starters.

Though it’s not yet a formal indictment — the courts are still trying to ascertain who was responsible for the acts of repression which left citizens dead or injured in December 2001 — Argentine judge Claudio Bonadío has ordered the 6.2 million dollars of De la Rúa’s assets be frozen.

According to Reuters, if the case is approved by a higher court it will go to trial. It will be interesting to see, if that does happen, whether or not Antonio De la Rúa, a close advisor to his father, will also be asked to testify.

Guardian Angels to patrol Mexico City

22guardians-190.jpgThe other day as I walked around downtown San Francisco I was reminded that the Guardian Angels — those groups of beret-sporting urban watchdogs I remember from my childhood — are alive and well, and still patrolling our streets. And as part of Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard’s plan to clean up the capital city, the Angels are off to D.F., where they will be watching the streets of the Centro Historico, the city’s historic center and tourist destination for many visitors which has been plagued by petty crime throughout the years.

The Angels that will be working in Mexico City aren’t a Mexican offshoot but are from U.S. According to Mexico City’s La Jornada, they will be paid by the tourism sector and will assist English-speaking visitors to the city. On a rather strange note, La Jornada reports that the Angels will also report “outsiders to the commmunity” to the authorities. Indeed, the headline in the paper translates roughly to “Foreigners to report the presence of ‘outsiders’ in the community”. Hmm…

Not everyone is happy with the impending arrival of the Angels. Some politicians aren’t sold yet, and want clarification that the group will be there to also train Mexican citizens and not “carry arms or assume the role of police,” reports La Jornada.

Prince William County Losing Latinos : Documented and Not

When Prince William County, Virginia passed an anti-immigrant measure earlier this month, a wave of Latinos began moving out of the county. And it’s not just undocumented Latinos. A climate of fear has permeated the county causing one-way U-haul rentals to go up and business at a money transfer store to go down. Schools teaching English have lost 80 percent of their students. Locals say that those who haven’t moved out , don’t dare step outside.

What a way to live.

Juanes’ La Vida es un Ratico

ShowLetter.jpgToday the much anticipated new Juanes album, La Vida es un Ratico, is out. The first single off the album, Me Enamora, has been breaking all sorts of records, holding a top spot for weeks in a row in the U.S. and at least 13 other countries.

I’ve been listening to the new album with my morning coffee and Juanes’ sound on la Vida is refreshing and different from his previous albums. I would say its not as dancy but rather shows a more mature Juanes with strong rock and even reggae influences. Juanes even gets political with a song about land mines, Minas Piedras, an issue he’s been working on for a while now.

My favorite song from the album, this morning Tres has me moving my hips.

So go and check out Juanes because la Vida really is un ratico no mas and shouldn’t we fill it with good music?

P.S.- Someone needs to tell iTunes that Juanes is not in the genre of reggaeton and hip hop.
