Chavez to reduce workday to 6 hours

hugo-chavez1.jpgI was beginning to think it was all bad in Chavez’s Venezuela, what with the disappearance of telenovelas and beer. But Huguito has gone and done something I’m sure many will be happy about: he’s trying to push forward a change to the constitution which will limit the workday to 6 hours.

But before you go out and buy a Chavez t-shirt, the rest of his proposed constitutional amendments are less fun; among them the elimination of the right to information and the elimination of the right to due process “during periods of exception decreed by the government,” reports Spain’s 20 Minutos.

Okay, I promise no more Chavez news until next week. Unless he doesn’t something loco, which is possible.

They’ve been planning it for awhile and while the state of Virginia rejected a controversial proposal to create the country’s first state-run facility where illegal immigrants arrested for certain crimes could be held while awaiting trial or until federal officials deport them, Prince William County’s supervisors unanimously voted yesterday to move forward with a plan to deny certain county services to illegal immigrants and to direct the police to enforce immigration laws.

Even Dinosaurs Want to be Latinos

_44179905_dino203x152.gifBeing Latino is so “in” right now that even science and prehistoric animals are trying to get in on the action. Argentine and Brazilian palaeontologists think they have found a new species of giant plant-eating dinosaur, Futalognkosaurus dukei (say it with a Spanish accent please), that roamed the Earth some 80m years ago. El gran Duke, as we’ll call him, would have been around 105 feet long, making him one of the biggest dinos ever found (go ahead insert your Latino size stereotype in here, you know you want to).

Back in March, Maegan told us how a sculpture of Jesus made in chocolate was raising a stink among Catholics. The artist, one Cosimo Cavallaro, even had to cancel his exhibit due to the controversy. But now the chocolate Chuy is back:

“My Sweet Lord,” an anatomically correct milk chocolate sculpture of Jesus Christ that infuriated Catholics before its April unveiling was canceled, returns Oct. 27 to a Chelsea art gallery, its creator said Tuesday.

This time, artist Cosimo Cavallaro said he expects the public exhibit to proceed without a problem.

“There is nothing offensive about this,” Cavallaro said of his controversial confectionary work. “If my intentions were to offend, if I did do something wrong, I wouldn’t be doing this. But I didn’t do anything wrong.”

Cavallaro, who received death threats before the April show was canceled, said the vast majority of his mail was in support of his six-foot piece.

AP reports that the exhibit, to be held at the Proposition Gallery in New York City, will also feature chocolate Virgin Marys and Saints.

ass.4.jpgA billboard put up and paid for by self-proclaimed “true American” John McCombs in Florida is drawing fire but not for reasons you might think. It’s not that Bay Minette has a strong pro-Hugo Chavez lobby, it’s that the billboard’s choice of language is offensive. Don’t Buy Gas from This Ass is the most intelligent response McCombs could come up with after Chavez said Bush was the devil and made nice with Iran. But locals aren’t happy with seeing “ass” everyday. They have complained to the city about the sign to try and get it removed. Just as smart is the placement of the billboard. It’s right near a BP station.
