A VL favorite, rockero and all-around good guy Juanes, has been immortalized in bronze in his hometown in Carolina del Principe, Colombia:
The 4,800 residents of Carolina del Principe greeted the 35-year-old Latin rock singer in the town’s central park, where the statue, which stands 6 feet, 5 inches tall, was erected. The statue shows Juanes with the long hair of his youth and a guitar slung over his back.Guarded by heavily armed soldiers, Juanes pointed out places of his childhood and where he played with his heavy metal group before he left the band to pursue a solo career. Later he gave a free concert to the adoring crowd
Last year, Juanes’ compatriota Shakira also got her own statue in her hometown of Barranquilla.

It’s getting harder and harder for me to be objective about Hugo Chavez with all of the stuff he’s done this year to stifle his people’s access to media and now, music. Spanish pop star Alejandro Sanz, wildly famous throughout Latin America, was set to perform at Caracas’ El Poliedro venue and the tickets had been sold out for months, but Huguito has cancelled the show. Guess why: because in 2004, Sanz had something unfavorable to say about Chavez; when asked what he thought of the president back then, he said:
“I don’t like him, the same way I don’t like leaders of other places, and I don’t think my own has done a great job either. I don’t come to start a revolution, I came to sing. But if I could write a song to this country, it would be called 3 million signatures,” he said, referring to the number required for a referendum against the Venezuelan president.
According to Spain’s 20 Minutos, Venezuela’s Minister of Education admitted on the radio that Sanz won’t be allowed to perform because of his “despotic” comments about the President.

12 Oct 2007That’s what an Alabama public health official said. Don Williamson said that a growing immigrant Latino population is bringing with them new cases of TB and chickenpox citing a 2006 statistic that out of the 53 reported cases of tuberculosis en Alabama, half of the infected were from Mexico of Guatemala.
But Williamson wasn’t saying this because he wants a crackdown on immigrants. According to him, he was saying just the opposite, that crackdowns on immigrants would lead to less of them seeking healthcare, creating problems for everyone.
Williamson also blamed immigrants for contributing to a rise in the infant mortality rate because many immigrants do not receive adequate prenatal care.

Luis Miguel Leal, video director; Jorge Barboza, video producer
This video is meant to pull at your heartstrings and make you nostalgic for family Christmases past. I don’t think it has much of a chance in this category and anyway corny Navidad vids just don’t do it for me.

They may not have used those exact words, but the Los Angeles Police Department recognized that they may have “inappropriately” handled protesters at a Los Angeles pro-immigrant rally on May Day. The police asked for the public’s forgiveness for beating protesters and journalists covering the even earlier this year.
