The price of the “canasta básica” — the most common staple items in the Mexican diet, such as tortillas, bolillos (bread rolls), tomatoes and sugar — has shot up 35% in just one week. This image from Mexico’s cámara de diputados speaks to the division between Mexican legislators for letting this happen.

The massive jump in prices shown on the posters — “Tortillas, 7 pesos per kilo when this administration began; today, 8.50.” “A kilo of beef steak, from 58 to 72 pesos. A kilo of sugar, from 15 to 28 pesos” — has occurred in just a few days, and will leave Mexican families with limited resources devastated. Even worse, the price of gas and transportation (called el gasolinazo) though postponed for now, is expected to take effect in the beginning of next year.

9 Oct 2007Everybody’s favorite princesita, Thalia, gave birth to a baby girl in New York City on Sunday. The little bundle of joy is named Sabrina Sakaë, and according to reports, her middle name means “princess” in Japanese.
Not one to wait around, Thalia called her friend “La Flaca”, Lily Estefan, on the El Gordo y La Flaca TV show to give her the good news.
Thalia was reportedly in labor for some 20 hours, and little Sabrina weighed in at 3.8 kilograms — 8.37 pounds.
As a tribute to Thalia’s newfound motherhood, why not look back at the last time Thalia discovered she was a mom: this classic clip of when Maria found out she was actually Nandito’s mama in that television masterpiece Maria la del Barrio.

I was able to hear/see a preview of Cafe Tacuba’s new work at Summerstage and now everyone can hear what the first-ever Latin act to headline at Lollapalooza has got. Sino is incredible. I am listening to it right now and I am deeply moved. The slower tracks like Seguir Siendo are beautifully composed and lyrically mesmerizing. Sino is the first new studio release in four years for the innovative quartet. Double Oscar-winner Gustavo Santaolalla is a producer on the album and the first single off the album, Volver a Comenzar has a great video (think artistic psychedelia with social commentary and cool guiyar riffs!)

Today marks 40 years since the death, some say murder, of Ernesto Guevara, popularly known as El Che. Fidel Castro called Che an “extraordinary” human, “highly cultured and of great intelligence” in an editorial in the Cuban newspaper Granma. The Argentinian born revolutionary is being honored across Latin America today and on Monday Bolivian President Evo Morales praised el Che.
Cuba, which became Che’s second home thanks to his pivotal role in the Cuban Revolution that overthrew Batista, began its commemorations of Guevara over the weekend.
