In “Joseph and Chico: A Cat Recounts the Life of Pope Benedict XVI,” the orange tabby cat tells readers the pope is “my dearest friend, a wonderful man with whom I’ve spent many happy moments.”

He recounts Benedict’s childhood and his passion for reading and playing the piano. The books depicts the future pope’s early steps in the Catholic Church, from when he entered a seminary in 1939 to his ordination as a priest in 1951.

America is Woman of the Year

5:25 pm By Maegan La Mala · Celebrities|Entertainment · Comments Off

68217.jpgUgly Betty herself, America Ferrera, has been named “Hispanic Woman of the Year” by the Hollywood Reporter and Billboard magazines:

Ferrera “is a leader for all women, but especially those in the Hispanic community,” publisher John Kilcullen said in a statement.

He said the 23-year-old actress is “dedicated to advancing the position of Hispanics in television and film.”

Why it’s “woman of the year” and not “performer” or “actress” is a mystery to me. Oh well, America was apparently thrilled, saying at the Hispanic Women in Entertainment awards breakfast on Tuesday saying “It’s an honor to be in such esteemed company.” It’s amazing all that America has achieved at such a young age. At only 23 years old, she’s already won a SAG award, an Emmy and a Golden Globe.

Fujimori is back in Peru facing human rights violations charges. Fujimori’s camp is also complaining about his treatmeant, saying his cell is too small and that he’s not being given a chance to go outside.

I know I’m gonna piss off alot of people here but doesn’t alot of what Mana does sound the same? Regardless, they are a force to be reckoned with and have a good chance of winning this award.

guatadopt.jpgLet me come clean. I have problems with transnational and transracial adoptions. There, I said it. I think the system is racist on a number of levels. The president of Guatemala has some concerns too, leading him to suspend adoptions starting in the new year.

The country’s president said he is taking the measure — seen by some as extreme in that it ignores the fate of what will quickly be thousands of abandoned children — amid growing concerns about the current system, which opponents say has led to paying mothers for children or coercing them to give up their babies.
An average of 17 children born in Guatemala leave the country for the United States every day with the parents who adopted them. Guatemala has long been considered a place where adoptions are relatively fast and uncomplicated. The Central American country is behind only China in the number of children adopted out to American families every year.
Guatemala has the highest per capita rate of adoption of any country in the world. One of every 100 children born in the country is adopted internationally. American officials say 5,000 adoptions have been approved this year, an all-time high for Guatemalan adoptions to the U.S. American officials also say that last year’s 4,000 adoptions were legal and untainted by any problems.
