2 Oct 200739 years ago today, hundreds — perhaps thousands — of student protesters were murdered by their government in the Plaza de las Tres Culturas, center of the Tlatelolco neighborhood in Mexico City. Most of the dead — the “disappeared” — were never recovered by their families and nearly 40 years later, the Mexican government still refuses to punish the perpetrators or look for retribution for the victims’ families.
On this October 2nd, let us not forget what happened on that October 2, 1968, when peaceful protesters died exercising their right to manifest dissent.
You can see more of our coverage of stories related to the Tlatelolco Massacre here.

Hillary Clinton gave an exclusive interview to my friend, blogger Juan Guillermo Tornoe, on his Hispanic Trending blog. In it, Hillary shares her thoughts about the Latino vote, immigration, and what Latinos can expect from a Clinton (part Deux) presidency.
Check out the interview on Hispanic Trending and let us know what you think about Hillary’s responses.

Bennifer apparently wasn’t good for the career of the Ben portion of the duo, or at least that’s what he says. In a juicy interview with Details magazine, Ben Affleck spills the beans:
“It was probably bad for my career,” he says, unlatching the timepiece, pulling it over his hand, and gripping it between his fingers. He’s talking about the Bennifer years (2002–2004).“What happens is this sort of bleed-over from the tabloids across your movie work. You go to a movie, you only go once. But the tabloids and Internet are everywhere. You can really subsume the public image of somebody. I ended up in an unfortunate crosshair position where I was in a relationship and [the media] mostly lied and inflated a bunch of salacious stuff for the sake of selling magazines. And I paid a certain price for that. Then, in concert with some movies that didn’t work . . .”
So does that mean he regrets his cameo in that fabulous video? Come to think of it, that was minor in comparison to the train wreck that was Gigli.

2 Oct 2007I was searching for an image to include with this little post but the images ranged from the stereotypical (maracas anyone?) to the narrow (since when does Hispanic Heritage Month mean a flamenco dancer or a Mexican dancer). Fellow Boricua blogger Liza over at Culture Kitchen gives some good reasons to hate Hispanic Heritage Month.
Hispanic assumes that all people in Latin America speak Spanish. Hispanic assumes all people in Latin America have a Spaniard and European ascendancy. Hispanic somehow has come to mean WHITE in this country.
I don’t use the term Hispanic for some of the same reasons as Liza. It’s just an ugly, dirty word that someone else stuck on.
Read all of Liza’s post and excellent explanation over at Culture Kitchen.

Did you just spit up your coffee reading that headline? That was the reaction this morning at my local Colombian/Mexican bakery when Univision’s morning show, Despierta America reported that Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said that the proposed fence on the Mexico U.S. border was good for the environment. The news story was met with loud sighs and head shakes by Latinos on my morning cafecito line. I haven’t been able to find the story anywhere else but what I was able to find is that Chertoff is doing some serious damage control because communities on the U.S. side of the border are concerned about the environmental impact the fence will have.
