Our beloved Shakira is taking some time off from music to further her education. La lovely Colombiana has got her head buried in books about ancient civilizations during summer school out here in Cali:
For the past month, the Colombian pop star has been taking a class at the University of California, Los Angeles, called “Introduction to Western Civilization: Ancient Civilizations from Prehistory to Circa A.D. 843.”
Apparently Shakira started the course last month, and passed herself off as a regular nobody in the class, leaving her professor floored when he found out she was famous:
“She told me she was visiting from Colombia and that she was just doing this for her own enlightenment and enjoyment,” Cleve said. “She looked like just an ordinary student. She wasn’t flamboyant … she didn’t act like a big celebrity or anything.”Shakira, who sat near the front in the third row of the lecture hall, would often discuss the course material with him after class.
“I was really impressed with how intelligent she was,” said Cleve.
Sounds like Shaki is more than just a pretty face and a pair of gyrating hips — a good example to young girls out there who idolize her. Though it takes a star’s salary to be able to pay those international student fees.

Thankfully my 10 year isn’t one of those kids, the kind that are up your ass to have what all her friends have. Most of her fifth grade friends do have cell phones, used to communicate with their parents as they walk home from school alone. But I still pick my daughter up, so the need wasn’t there. However when offered the chance to review Kajeet, a new cell phone service for kids, I jumped at the chance. I wanted to see what the hype was about and if indeed I did have control of how my daughter would use it. I was pleasantly surprised. My daughter loved the cute characters that are used as the phone’s spokespeople and promptly decorated her LG 225 camera phone with stickers of big headed alien looking creatures she knew by name. I loved the fact that I could control not only who my daughter called but how calls were payed for.
Back in March, the Virgin Mary made an appearance on a baking pan in Houston. Then she was at it again on the border, crying some bloody tears. Now she’s at it again, making her presence known yet again on — of all things — a lemon slice:
A Texas man said he has spotted the face of the Virgin Mary on a lemon slice.Marty Nance of Watauga, Texas, spotted the face earlier this week while he was cutting the lemon at his father’s bar.
However, where Nance sees the Virgin Mary, others in the bar are seeing other faces.

So far the Democrats hoping to be the next U.S. President have participated in forums for the Latino community, the African American/black community, the U.S. Indigenous community, and the GLBT community. And the Republicans? Well as a group they seem to only want to debate/participate in forums for the mainstream which by default, let’s be real here, means white middle U.S.
The Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art may contain the largest collection of Western Art outside of the west but works by greats including Spanish painters like Picasso and Miro but most won’t see them. And while many will say it’s an example of Iranian censorship and anti-Western sentiment, the reasons given an a Los Angeles Times article range from a lack of space to protecting the paintings.
