Shakira might not be able to vote in this country, but she’s behind another Clinton: Bill Clinton’s pet project, the Clinton Global Initiative. Shaki was in New York to show her support of the former president’s initiative to gather people together to discuss global problems and walk away with concrete steps for change in place.
Shakira was also there to announce her own pledge for change:
…a $40 million project to help Peru and Nicaragua rebuild after natural disasters, as well as a $5 million commitment for health and education services in four Latin American countries.
Joining Shakira in supporting the Clinton Initiative are a slew of A-list celebs, among them Chris Rock, Alicia Keys and Bono.

28 Sep 2007I, sadly, wasn’t surprised when I heard that Queer, mostly people of color activists, were attacked and arrested by the New York City Police Department
On the night of Wednesday, September 26, officers from the 9th Precinct of the New York Police Department attacked without provocation members of the Sylvia Rivera Law Project and of its community. Two of our community members were violently arrested, and others were pepper sprayed in the face without warning or cause. The Sylvia Rivera Law Project (www.srlp.org) is an organization that works on behalf of low-income people of color who are transgender, gender non-conforming, or intersex, providing free legal services and advocacy among many other initiatives. On Wednesday night, the Sylvia Rivera Law Project was celebrating its fifth anniversary with a celebration and fundraising event at a bar in the East Village.
A group of our community members, consisting largely of queer and
transgender people of color, witnessed two officers attempting to
detain a young Black man outside of the bar. Several of our community
members asked the officers why they were making the arrest and using
excessive force. Despite the fact that our community was on the
sidewalk, gathered peacefully and not obstructing foot traffic, the
NYPD chose to forcefully grab two people and arrested them. Without
warning, an officer then sprayed pepper spray across the group in a
wide arc, temporarily blinding many and causing vomiting and intense
pain.

How could I not be behind my fellow Boricua Ricky Martin? He was so gracious when he won Latin Grammys last year, not to mention yummy.
The Secretary of Social Development of Mexico, Beatriz Zavala Peniche, appeared before Mexican legislators to announce a striking statistic: 44,700,000 Mexicans are now living in poverty, more than 14 million of which live in conditions that can be described as extreme.
Malnutrition continues to a problem in rural areas, and Zavala Peniche announced a program that would provide vitamin-enriched milk to children living in these communities. Special programs are also being put in place for seniors older than 70, who will be entitled to receive 1000 pesos ($91) bi-monthly to help them get by.
The Secretary said that the biggest problems Mexico faces now are inequality and social exclusion.

Concerned about border security? My take on this story is that maybe the U.S. should worry less about fences and more about officer training.
On Sunday a trio of Mexican teens detained for drug smuggling broke free, stole a U.S. Border Patrol vehicle, and drove it to Mexico. Mexican authorities were able to relocate the vehicle without its temporary occupants who apparently have not been caught.
And how was the vehicle stolen in the first place?
“As the agent was doing his search, he left the vehicle running and the keys in the ignition, so one of the lads, still wearing handcuffs, grabbed the steering wheel and they headed back to Mexico,” a police spokesman said.
Funny and oh so sad at the same time. The car was recovered, the detainees were not.

Former Bolivian president Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada has been named in a lawsuit filed by relatives of Bolivians killed during clashes with security forces in 2003. According to the suit, filed on behalf od the families by the NYC based Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR), Sanchez de Lozada ordered a crackdown on protests against his government which killed 67 people and wounded hundreds more. Sanchez de Lozada resigned and left the country soon after the incident, 13 months into his second term as president and has been living in the US in self-imposed exile since. Another lawsuit with the same charges was filed against Carlos Sanchez Berzain, a former interior and defense minister.

26 Sep 2007Luis Miguel raised eyebrows at his recent show in Las Vegas not only because his (“she’s not my daughter”) hija Michelle Salas was in attendance, but because of his hairstyle. Mexico’s El Universal calls it Sinatra-esque, and I call it plain old dorky:

Check out more pics of LuisMi’s new hair at El Universal.

Hugo Chavez is getting into the film business, or rather the government of Venezuela is, funding a new state-controlled movie studio called Cinema Villa. And as you might have guessed, the content of the films set to be produced are political in nature:
Now rolling are biopics about national heroes and villains, including Luis Posada Carriles, the former CIA operative who allegedly masterminded a jetliner bombing and tried to kill Fidel Castro.Scenes are being shot in and around Caracas this month for the movie about Posada, considered by Chavez to be a Latin American version of Osama bin Laden. Scheduled for international release next year, it’s one of a growing number of films the socialist government is financing in a fusion of politics and art.
The trend is a boost to homegrown cinema in Venezuela, but critics say it reeks of Soviet-style propaganda efforts.
