Prince William Latinos Fight Back With Their Wallets

princewilliam.jpgEconomic boycotts are an extremely difficult political tactic. They require widespread mass support in order to be effective. But the difficulty of using such a weapon isn't stopping Latinos in Prince William County, Virginia from using it as a tool against anti-immigrant policies. The boycott, which began yesterday, is a week long campaign targeting all non-immigrant-owned businesses, including such chains as Wal-Mart and McDonald's. At such an important time for businesses, back to school time, the impact of a boycott could be great. Although, those that back the measure aren't so sure.

"They don't have a prayer of reversing this resolution, which has the support of 80 percent of county residents," said Greg Letiecq, an activist who heads Help Save Manassas. "This is an attempt to bully immigrant businesses."

Board Chairman Corey A. Stewart (R-At Large) also said the boycott would have little impact.

"I think it's going to have no effect whatsoever," he said. "It just strengthens our resolve and reaffirms that we're doing the right thing," he said. "And it confirms that illegal immigrants and their support groups have no respect for our community or the rule of law. It's just going to inflame people and make people that much more upset with illegal immigration."

Time will tell the effectiveness of the boycott, but if history teaches us anything it's that one boycott will not win the war.

1. Mario ~ Tuesday, Aug 28 2007 | 16:25H:

The Board of Supervisors in Prince William County, outside Washington, D.C., says police will be able to ask about immigration status and county officials will be able to deny services to undocumented persons, ranging from non-emergency medical care to public parks, to libraries.

The above statement pretty much sums up what the boycott is all about, a bunch of people are upset because they feel that folks that are here illegally, should A) be left alone by law enforcement personnel, even though they are breaking the law, and that B) law abiding, tax paying citizens owe these same law breakers social services. Am I missing anything here?

boycotts don't work.

in Waukegan, where I am from, there is an on-going boycott against non-latino businesses or other businesses that don't/won't support the 287(g) program for local police to be trained as immigration agents.

these latino businesses are struggling and some of them are going belly up. the boycott is against non-latino business, not to shop at Jewel Food store (regional chain) or any other non-latino business. the latin activists want latino residents to only shop at latino places of business with the NO 287(g) sign.

White people and other non-latino residents have a silent counter-boycott NOT to patronize businesses WITH the "no 287(g)" sign.

in reality, latino businesses with these signs in their storefront are hurting pretty bad.

and this boycott has been going on since July 2nd.

A lot of people in the community don't understand why Latinos WANT to keep violent criminal illegal aliens in their neighborhoods? Its puzzling.
