Chavez: Castro not dead (again)

20 Aug 2007

fidel12-3.jpgVenezuelan president Hugo Chavez is denying reports again circulating on the Internet that Fidel Castro is either dead or dying. Chavez said on his weekly radio show yesterday that Fidel is “a fighter” and is “writing, and producing.”

“On the Internet there are rumors that Fidel is dead or that is he is intubated and they are just waiting for the moment when that happens. Fidel is producing, and I know, writing. I talked to him on his birthday and I sent him a portrait of Bolivar as a gift,” he said.

There you have it. If Fidel’s special friend says it, it’s got to be true. I for one am happy to hear that Fidel is producing and writing again, and I can’t wait to hear the def beats he lays down on his new tracks.

vert.mexico.ap.jpgAs we’ve pointed out time and time again, Mexico City seems to be trying to win some kind of award for being the most liberal city in Latin America. And in fact, Mexico the country has won an award: gay Destination of the Year by the PlanetOut Travel Awards, which recognize gay-friendly tourist destinations. Past winners have included Barcelona and Buenos Aires.

According to Mexico City blog DFinitivo, the world’s largest city is going to begin actively courting the gay travel dollar, and the Secretary of Tourism for DF has joined the International Gay and Lesbian Travel Association to prove it. Gay travelers will be welcomed with specialized maps outlining areas of interest for nightlife, cultural events and more.

richardson_bill2.jpgLatino Democratic presidential candidate and New Mexico governor Bill Richardson lost one of his campaign aides when it was revealed that he used to work for a legal brothel in Nevada and was wanted on a felony arrest warrant in California.

Kristian Forland, the campaign’s eastern Nevada field director, is being sought by Los Angeles County authorities for failure to appear on four counts of writing bad checks. Forland also was arrested twice, once last year and again last month, in his home of Elko, Nev., on a similar bad check charge out of Las Vegas.Forland also was investigated by Elko police after women working at Mona’s Ranch, a legal brothel, complained he was shorting them on their pay. An investigator described Forland as “at best a manager of the property,” according to a June 2006 police report obtained by the AP.
