A “super cerebro” — a real-life Doogie Howser — has emerged in the Mexican state of Puebla: a 12-year old named Andrew Almazán just finished high school and is off to study medicine and psychology at the university level.
The University of the Americas in Puebla announced today that they have accepted little Andrew, and that he has received a grant which covers all of his costs, including providing a home on campus where he can live with his parents.
The university has also created a special program for him given his young age, which for now would not require him to perform autopsies or dissections.

16 Aug 2007I found this via Culture Kitchen. No se if it crosses the satire line because it’s clearly meant to be funny coming from the Latino Comedy Project. Then again I’m not really a comedy person. What do you all think?

Now with a little political knowledge, me having been the only Latina Brownie (junior Girl Scout)has taken on a whole new meaning. And while the GLBT community is still not acceptable in scouting culture, being Latino is, or so it seems.
While the Boy Scouts have been much more outspoken about their rejection of gay boys, they have cloaked their racism in an allegiance to American systems. How can the Boy Scouts simultaneously recruit immigrant boys and deport their parents who use the values that the Boy Scouts praise to make a living in this country?Handbooks, advertisements, and even bumper stickers have been translated into Spanish. And though the organization is predominantly white, the Scouts are getting creative by offering soccer programs to children of immigrants from Central and South America who other wise might not think about camping, hiking, or knot-tying.

Peruanos all over the world are wracked with concern and worry following strong earthquakes (some news sources say it was one, others say there were two separate earthquakes). When I went to bed last night the quake(s), centered near the cities of Ica and Chincha, had claimed 50 some lives. This morning the death toll was up to 337 and expected to rise. The 7.9 magnitude earthquake prompted tsunami warnings in other neighboring South American nations like Chile.
Because of the magnitude of the quake, communication into Peru from worried friends and family outside the nation has proved nearly impossible.
Blessings and thoughts to all impacted by this natural disaster.
