The anti-immigrant sentiment and policies in the United Sates have economic effects far beyond national borders. For the first time the amount of money being sent home to Mexico from immigrants here has flatlined instead of rising as it has been doing in past years. Fearing redadas, many immigrants are stockpiling their money just in case they are forced to move or are deported back to Mexico. The percentage of Mexicans sending money back home has dropped from 71 percent to 64 percent in states with large immigrant populations (like NY). The drop is greater in other states from 80 percent to 56 percent. But its not just fear that lowering the number or remesas and the amount if money being sent, it’s because the job market has gotten worse for undocumented workers.
