fidel.jpgSherry Sullivan , a woman in Maine has filed a lawsuit against Cuban President Fidel Castro, alleging that the Cuban leader caused the wrongful death of her pilot father after he was shot down over Cuba and imprisoned in 1963 while on a covert mission. The lawsuit was originally filed back in May but the case was delayed until last week because of considerations on ow to serve papers to Castro, his brother Raul, the Cuban army, and the Republic of Cuba, all who are also named in the suit. Sara Ramirez Has Got Leche

8:40 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Food|Marketing · Comments Off

25 Jul 2007

sarah.jpgI can appreciate the attempt to sex up milk’s image using desirable celebs and reaching out to the Latino community. The Milk Processors Education Program (MilkPEP)already put Sofia Vergara as their poster girl last year. This year their Latino face is none other than Grey Anatomy’s star, Sara Ramirez. The ads featuring the Mexican-born Sara Ramirez were released nationwide in magazine’s yesterday. What’s ironic is that the shapely Ramirez is being used not just for her sex appeal but for her shape. The message being sent is not just that milk is good for you but that milk can help you lose weight.

The Journalist and the Foreign Minister

7:58 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Blogs|Peru · Comments Off

24 Jul 2007

1%2Bcopia.jpgAh, crushes. How many of us have pined after celebrities, sighed for politicians, and dreamed of romantic interludes with other public figures. Most of us don’t write about these little fantasies on our blogs (thank God) but a certain Peruvian journalist, one Luis Iparraguirre (pictured above, in the middle), did, and let the world know about his love for his country’s Foreign Minister, Mercedes Araoz. His blog, Crónicas de Pollada (gotta love that name), was the scene of the declaration of love, and little did he know that his “Carta de Amor” would actually reach the object of his affections:

In a love letter published on his blog, journalist Luis Iparraguirre tells the Minister: “Can I call you Meche? Can I call you mine? Hey, I know you are not, but you will be tonight in my dreams.”

Illegal Immigration : Blame Aborted Fetuses

1:32 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Controversia|Immigration|Politics|Women · Comments Off

24 Jul 2007

tom.jpgFormer Republican Congressman Tom DeLay knows exactly who to blames for the “illegal” invasion of immigrants, 40 million aborted fetuses. In a speech to college Republicans DeLay said:

If you believe abortion, if you believe that doesn’t affect you… I contend it affects you in immigration. If we had those 40 million children that were killed over the last 40 years, we wouldn’t need the illegal immigrants to fill the jobs that they are doing today. Think about it.

While you try and wrap your brain around the ridiculousness you can actually see Delay say this here(You have to fast forward to 3:45 unless you want to watch and listen to scary young Republicans until then).

JLo and Marc to hit the road together

12:42 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Music · 1 Comment

24 Jul 2007

jlo1.jpgPuerto Rican power couple JLo and Marc Anthony will be taking their oh-so-perfect love on the road on their first national tour together, reports People magazine:

Jennifer Lopez and husband Marc Anthony will co-headline their first tour together this fall.

The occasion will mark Lopez’s first-ever live concert road trip.

The couple, both 38, will perform separate sets of their own material and will also duet together, and each set will include songs in English and Spanish, according to representatives for the duo.

I wonder if this isn’t going to deal a deadly blow to JLo’s career. Not all are her fans are fans of her husband, and having to sit through his numbers or relive the whole duet thing again. What’s next, a Sonny and Cher-like TV special?

On the bright side of things, People reports that the tour will have an altruistic mission: to bring attention to the problem of childhood obesity in the Latino community. A worthy cause indeed, but isn’t Marc like the last person on earth that should be a poster child for this?

Gonzales : A Regular Fix It Guy

8:37 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Politics · Comments Off

24 Jul 2007

gonzales.jpgAttorney General Alberto Gonzales is just a good old fix it guy, vowing to stay in office to fix problems with the Justice Department. Gonzales acknowledged the Justice Department has been shaken by accusations that partisan politics played a role in hiring practices and the administration of justice.

“There are two options available in light of these allegations,” Gonzales said. “I could walk away or I could devote my time, effort and energy to fix the problems.”
“Since I have never been one to quit, I decided that the best course of action was to remain here and fix the problems.”

Indigenas.jpgEvery year thousands of undocumented people pass into the U.S. through the border with Mexico, and not all of them are Mexican. Many begin their journey in their homelands in Central America, and in order to reach U.S. territory must become, in the words of Los Tigres del Norte –“dos veces mojados”crossing not one border but two. Central Americans entering Mexican territory do not have it easy, and allegations of abuse on the part of Mexican officials has been a catalyst for a demand by Mexico’s Human Rights Center for the National Commission of Human Rights (CNDH) to investigate the allegations:

In a press release, the National Center for Human Rights announced that there have been numerous complaints filed against military personnel and INM [Mexican Immigration authority) officials for stealing of money, physical and sexual aggression against Guatemalans, Hondurans and Salvadorans without CNDH having ever addressed the problems.

9 year-old televangelist finds fame on YouTube

11:45 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · children|Peru|Religion · Comments Off

23 Jul 2007

There’s really nothing I can say to do this video justice. I watched it, I was frightened and that’s that. It’s a 9 year-old child televangelist from Peru preaching like he’s possessed, and for those who don’t speak Spanish, he’s basically on tirade about how evolution is a lie.

According to 20 Minutos, the kid’s name is Nazaret Castillo Rey (stage name “Casti Rey”), he’s Peruvian, and has been preaching since he was 3 . Apparently his little empire is growing thanks to YouTube, which is making Casti Rey a household name. I think someone needs to call Señorita Laura on his parents for child exploitation.

Bolivians : Hell No We Won’t Go (to a New Capital)

10:53 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Bolivia|Politics · Comments Off

23 Jul 2007

bolivia%20protests.jpgAbout a million people took to the streets of Bolivia’s capital city La Paz on Friday to protest efforts to move the nation’s capital. According to news reports, the crowd was made up of La Paz residents and members of the Aymara community bused in from the surrounding countryside. They were all united ,waving the red and green La Paz state flag. The executive and legislative branches of the Bolivian government are based in La Paz while the judicial branch is located 255 miles to the southeast, in Sucre. Bolivia was officially founded in Sucre in 1825 but lost its capital title in 1899 in a civil war.

Eastern states argue that Sucre, nearer the country’s center, can better represent the entire country than La Paz, which is on Bolivia’s far western edge.
La Paz backers say switching the capital from Bolivia’s largest city, with a metropolitan population of 1.7 million, to Sucre, population 250,000, would be expensive and divisive.
