fidel.jpgSherry Sullivan , a woman in Maine has filed a lawsuit against Cuban President Fidel Castro, alleging that the Cuban leader caused the wrongful death of her pilot father after he was shot down over Cuba and imprisoned in 1963 while on a covert mission. The lawsuit was originally filed back in May but the case was delayed until last week because of considerations on ow to serve papers to Castro, his brother Raul, the Cuban army, and the Republic of Cuba, all who are also named in the suit. A certified Spanish translation of the suit was delivered to Cuba by registered mail, although no proof of its delivery to the parties named has been received.

According to the suit, in 1963 29 year old Geoffrey Francis Sullivan was shot down, captured, and died while being held in a Cuban jail for political prisoners. The Social Security Administration has declared that Sullivan is dead, and the Department of Veterans Affairs has listed him as missing in action. Sullivan doesn’t have any proof that her father was killed, just a belief. The suit says Castro and his co-defendants are liable under the Anti-Terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996, which allows victims of states that have been identified as sponsors of terrorism to sue for damages.
