vivirlatino130x130.gifAround this time two years ago, we began the offline test phase of what would later become VivirLatino.com, a project all of us were excited and passionate about, and which had one clear goal in mind: to help fill the void in Latino online media. That passion hasn’t waned one bit in the past two years, and the biggest part of what keeps us going day after day is you! Today, as we celebrate the milestone of the 2000th post on our blog, we want to say thanks to the thousands of you who read us daily, and support us in other ways as well. We love you guys!

All gushing aside, 2000 posts is A LOT of writing. It seems like if it happened, we wrote about it. We’ve live blogged major (and not so major) events, we’ve covered the Latin Grammies and a Democratic debate, we’ve attended protests and rallies, and we’ve even covered elections coast to coast. And even all that doesn’t even scratch the surface of all the chisme, controversy and polemic we’ve covered, and the debates we’ve engaged in — willingly or unwillingly — as a result of it. Phew!

As we approach our second birthday, October 2nd, we’ll be taking a look back on the stories we’ve covered and where they are today. And if you have any favorite posts or stories you’d like us to revisit, please let us know in the comments section.

Reports the International Herald Tribune:

Four New Yorkers, three Californians and a Minnesota native, all from minority backgrounds, have studied in Havana since April 2001.

The six women and two men made up the first class of Americans to graduate from the Latin American School of Medicine since Castro offered free medical training to U.S. students after meeting with a delegation from the Congressional Black Caucus seven years ago.

“I’ve learned that medicine is not a business,” said Toussaint Reynolds, a graduate from Massapequa, New York. “I will be a better doctor in the United States for it.”

fidel.jpgSherry Sullivan , a woman in Maine has filed a lawsuit against Cuban President Fidel Castro, alleging that the Cuban leader caused the wrongful death of her pilot father after he was shot down over Cuba and imprisoned in 1963 while on a covert mission. The lawsuit was originally filed back in May but the case was delayed until last week because of considerations on ow to serve papers to Castro, his brother Raul, the Cuban army, and the Republic of Cuba, all who are also named in the suit. A certified Spanish translation of the suit was delivered to Cuba by registered mail, although no proof of its delivery to the parties named has been received.

Sara Ramirez Has Got Leche

sarah.jpgI can appreciate the attempt to sex up milk’s image using desirable celebs and reaching out to the Latino community. The Milk Processors Education Program (MilkPEP)already put Sofia Vergara as their poster girl last year. This year their Latino face is none other than Grey Anatomy’s star, Sara Ramirez. The ads featuring the Mexican-born Sara Ramirez were released nationwide in magazine’s yesterday. What’s ironic is that the shapely Ramirez is being used not just for her sex appeal but for her shape. The message being sent is not just that milk is good for you but that milk can help you lose weight.
