Even Babies Loved Cafe Tacuba in Central Park

GabiCafeTacuba.jpgYesterday Cafe Tacuba rocked Central Park SummerStage. Opening for the rockeros Mexicanos were Rican reggaetonera/rapera La Sista. Her Afro-Caribbean rhythms had me moving my hips but she wasn’t that greatly received by the crowd. Pacha Massive was more welcomed with their more electronic sound even though I thought the Summerstage sound system did them no good. But the main act, Cafe Tacuba packed in Summerstage in a way I have never seen before. So much so that many a fan was left outside because the gates were shut.

What was just as much fun as jumping around to Cafe Tacuba and some of their hits (las Flores, Eres, Chilanga Banda etc….) was watching tge fans. There were more Che tee shirts than should be allowed (seriously when does el Che move from being a revolutionary statement to fashion statement”). Long haired tattooed Mexicans in leather carrying kids on their shoulders despite much smoking (and I’m not just talking cigarettes). Boys in lucha libre masks and Chespirito tees. And of course the obligatory Mexican futbol jersey, after all Mexico did beat Uruguay winning third place in the Copa America.

Cafe Tacuba brough politics to their music, commenting on New York City, ” What a nice city you have with such nice buildings. People all over the world work so hard so you can all live so well”. And instead of doing the typical ” Donde estan los Mexicanos….los Chilenos, etc etc” Cafe Tacuba reminded us that we are all Latin American saying, “Es lo mismo, no existen”.

Seems like the crowd in Central Park was a lot more like the audience I’m used to for Café Tacuba shows. The crowd at the Hollywood Bowl greeted them well, but Rubén (the lead singer) noted a couple of times that the folks in the front — expensive! — row seats were not even dancing. Everyone in the back seats, which are much less expensive were a lot more excited about the band.

I posted a short review at my blog.
