Virginia is for Lovers. One Virginia County isn't for Latinos

13:01 H | Topics: Immigration - Virginia

virginiaimmigrants.jpgThe Board of Supervisors in Prince William County, outside Washington, D.C., says police will be able to ask about immigration status and county officials will be able to deny services to undocumented persons, ranging from non-emergency medical care to public parks, to libraries. They say they feel compelled to do something in the wake of Congress's failure to overhaul immigration law. Opponents call the measure racist and say it opens the door to legalized racial profiling. And before anyone tells me that the law will only impact undocumented immigrants let me leave you with a quote from someone in Virginia.

“I don’t see a white [county] employee asking a person with blue eyes and white skin for proof of residence,” said Ricardo Juarez, a leader for Mexicanos Sin Fronteras in Prince William County.

Ricardo Juarez's comment in the article is racist.
“I don’t see a white [county] employee asking a person with blue eyes and white skin for proof of residence,”

Notice the shall inquire into the citizenship or immigration status of any person - that includes those with blue eyes and white skin.
By the way, many whites have brown eyes, green eyes, etc.

In fact the resolution specifically states that County Police Officers shall inquire into the citizenship or immigration status of
any person detained for a violation of a state law or municipal ordinance,
regardless of the person’s national origin, ethnicity, or race where such inquiry
does not expand the duration of the detention. In all such cases where a person
indicates that he or she is not a citizen or national of the United States, the Police
Department shall verify whether or not the person is lawfully present in the
United States, pursuant to United States Code Title 8, subsection 1373( c ). If the
person is verified to be unlawfully present in the United States, the Police
Department shall cooperate with any request by federal immigration authorities to
detain the alien or transfer the alien to the custody of the federal government.

Ok let's be real. Police aren't going to be stopping stereotypically looking white people. I, Latina as I am, will not likely get stopped, because I have light skinned privilege and hazel eyes. My partner and children wouldn't be so lucky, chances are with their brown skin they will be asked for their papers. What is being discussed here is racial profiling.

This ordinance is not against immigrants, it is against illegal immigrants. People who invoke race with this issue are ignoring the fact that these people are breaking the law. Do you want our laws enforced or not? Or do you want certain laws enforced but not others? Or do you want only certain people to have to obey the law and not others?

Crossing a man invented border is by far less of a crime than denying people their human and civil rights. I would like the government to do something about abysmal school conditions and the fact that this year less people in the U.S. have health insurance than last year. There are plenty of laws against big business that aren't being enforced. Why don't we start enforcing those? Oh wait those would overwhelmingly impact white people wouldn't it. We wouldn't want that would we?
