Would you vote for a candidate who used the gay slur, the “f” word? It certainly didn’t help the career of Grey’s Anatomy actor Isaiah Washington. What if the slur were in a different language, say Spanish? Well Democratic presidential hopeful Bill Richardson used the word maricón in an exchange over a year ago with shock jock (and racist) Don Imus and now Richardson is scrambling to apologize.
The New Mexico governor used the term as part of a joke instigated by talk show host Don Imus during a March 29, 2006, segment of his “Imus in the Morning” syndicated radio program, simulcast on MSNBC. “Bernard on the staff here has been claiming you’re not really Hispanic so– that you’re just claiming that for some sort of advantage or something,” Imus said to Richardson, tongue clearly in cheek. “You can just answer this yes or no and this will answer that question. Would you agree that Bernard is a maricón?”
Without missing a beat, Richardson replied in Spanish, “Yo creo que Bernardo, sí — es un maricón si él piensa que yo no soy hispano. [General laughter] Was that good enough or what? [General laughter]”
“That’s good enough for me,” Imus replied.

Defending Copa America champions Brazil are in the finals after beating Uruguay (and almost ending in a beat down). The semi-final match played in Maraicabo, Venezuela experienced a 14 minute delay when the floodlights failed. The two South American teams went back forth with the lead until the end with a tie of 2-2. The penalty kicks were gut wrenching to watch with Brazil winning in the end but the win wasn’t without incident. After Brazil won, they have thrown it in Uruguay’s face a bit too much causing a near scuffle.
Don’t forget tonight it’s Mexico vs. Argentina
to determine who will be up against Brazil in the final.

11 Jul 2007…and wins. Sure, accuse me of being biased, but in this little exchange, Moore is triumphant, even if he does (like most liberals) lose his cool at the end. The director of the upcoming film Sicko, which compares the U.S. healthcare system to other countries — most notably Cuba — faced off with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, accusing both him and his network of being pawns for the pharmaceutical industry. Check out the video which includes an intro by Dr. Sanjay Gupta which sent Moore into a frenzy, then the face-off with Wolf. After the jump you’ll see Dr. Gupta attempt to face up to Moore on Larry King Live.

11 Jul 2007Earlier this week we talked about the latest attempts to raise the profile of Frida Kahlo in the world, in honor of the 100th anniversary of her birth. While some might say that this is all too much, Mexico City thinks not. They’ve converted some of their city buses into “Fridabúses” — moving shrines honoring the painter. According to Mexico City blog DFinitivo, the buses also serve an altruistic purpose:
The Fridabúses are the first step in exalting important women in history involved in education, science and the struggle for women’s rights — women whose actions strengthened equal gender rights.

People may call Attorney General Alberto Gonzales many things but dumb shouldn’t be one of them, especially when it comes to civil rights violations stemming from the USA Patriot Act. Gonzales may have told lawmakers the FBI had not abused its potent new terrorism-fighting powers when he wanted to renew the Patriot Act but the truth is six days earlier, the FBI sent Gonzales a copy of a report that said its agents had obtained personal information that they were not entitled to have. And that was just one of at least half a dozen reports of legal or procedural violations that Gonzales received in the three months before he made his statement to the Senate intelligence committee.
Just goes to show you that its not enough to have a Latino in a high level of government. It has to be the right Latino.
