MSNBC is doing a series of reports based on what “American readers” say they are interested in:
In our first Gut Check America vote, thousands of readers around the country rated illegal immigration as the issue of most concern for them. Among them was Gary Rutledge, a Tulsa, Okla., college professor who wrote about being involved in a traffic accident with an apparent illegal immigrant.
What makes someone an “apparent illegal immigrant”, according to the article:
The other driver, a young Hispanic man, did not speak English, did not have a driver’s license or insurance. The officer suspected the man was an illegal immigrant, Rutledge said, but he did not check his immigration status because such inquiries weren’t allowed in misdemeanor cases.
The white political science professor is shown seated with a photograph of Ronald Reagan in the background. On the upper right margin of the article you can click to see a video of a white man angrily protesting, holding a sign that says among other things, “Deport All Illegal Aliens Now”. The article features Professor Rutledge complaining about how “illegals” don’t want to assimilate and live in a world where doing all things illegally is the norm. Another person featured in the article is a right wing radio host Dan Howard, an airplane salesman by day.
Howard, who charges that the U.S. government is failing in its duty to protect the country from a “silent invasion” by illegal immigrants,
But lest you think the article is unfair and unbalanced, there are two, count ‘em, two clearly identifiable Latino voices. One is that of Edith, a 17-year-old shopkeeper who wouldn’t give her last name. She spoke of how business is slow because of immigration fears. The other voice is of Sebastian Lantos, a legal (my emphasis) immigrant from Argentina who is spokesman for the Coalition of Hispanic Organizations.
With woe is the white man stories like this is it any wonder I still get emails telling me to go where I came from (Queens, NYC by the way).
