As Mexico celebrates the 100 year anniversary of the birth of one of its most famous artists, Frida Kahlo, the rest of the world is also celebrating. Friday retrospectives, exhibits and other events are happening across the globe. Mexico City's El Universal reports:
In the United States, an exhibit of 45 oil painting will tour the Walker Art Centre in Minneapolis, the MOMA in San Francisco and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington will show 10 of her letters and 25 unpublished photos of personal items. In New York, the Cafe Frida restaurant and the Leo Matiz Foundation will present an exhibit of photos of Friday taken by Matiz. In Brazil there will be a play by Maura Baiocchi: Frida Kahlo - A woman of stone gives birth at night.
In Cuba, 40 artists opened today an exhibit called "Frida and Diego: Voices of the Earth", which will include contests, a children's art workshop, classes, a film festival and the inauguration of a collective mural. As the world celebrates, many others in Mexico worry whether if all of these festivities aren't just another way to make money off of Frida's memory. Teresa del Conde, co-author of a book about Frida Kahlo, charges: “It's just marketing, a way to make money, which only damages and cheapens the image of the painter."And in the Philippines, the Cervantes Institute begins the Queremos Tanto a Frida film festival, an homage Frida Kahlo, with movie screenings and dance.
