Juan%20roman%20Riquelme.jpgLast night’s Copa America match between Argentina and Colombia was absolutely enthralling, even though many of my Colombian friends couldn’t even bare to watch it saying the Colombian team has been playing horribly. Argentina beat Colombia 4-2 (with Argentina scoring three goals in the first half). Two goals came via Juan Roman Riquelme who came out of retirement just before he led Boca Juniors last month to its sixth Copa Libertadores championship (good move). Yesterday’s win put Argentina in the Copa America’s quarterfinals puts Colombia on the verge of elimination with one match remaining against the United States.

Rodrigo Y Gabriela Rocking Central Park SummerStage

RodrigoyGabriela.jpgWhat do you get when two Mexican (via Dublin, Ireland) guitarists play their unique flamenco metal acoustic guitar fusion song called “Fuck the USA Visa Department”? You get Rodrigo and Gabriela headlining this past Sunday’s Summerstage concert in Rumsey Playfield, NYC. The concert had a varied mix of people waiting three hours in the July sun on Sunday and it was oh so worth it. Only Rodrigo (Sanchez) and Gabriela (Quintero) could get away with banging time on their guitar a la Espanola in between Metallica and Zeppelin rifs. Gabriela could be seen flashing a rock out sign between songs while Rodrigo led the crowd in three part hand clapping harmony. Rodridgo improvised using a water bottle as a guitar slide to aid him in creating sounds that you wouldn’t believe were coming from a guitar unless you saw it yourself. I’ve been listening to this talented duo since their album was released last October and you should catch up and listen too. It’s with good reason that “Rodrigo y Gabriela,” beat both the Arctic Monkeys AND Johnny Cash to number one in the Irish charts.

Hate crime survivor dead

xin_0707040310199171024821.jpg18 year-old David Ritcheson, a young Latino man from Houston who survived a brutal racially motivated attack last year has died after jumping from a Carnival cruise ship:

David Ritcheson hated being known as “that kid” the teenager who was beaten unconscious and sodomized with a plastic pole during a party where one of his assailants shouted “White Power!” Ritcheson didn’t want to stand out from his classmates because of the assault, but he acknowledged in an interview that “it was just really hard to hold your head up, even to walk outside with everyone almost in the world knowing what happened.” That anguish may have contributed to his decision to leap Sunday from a cruise ship to his death in the Gulf of Mexico.

A man at Ritcheson’s home who identified himself as the teen’s father confirmed the death Monday to The Associated Press. He declined to give his name or comment further, saying the family would issue a statement later.

What’s unclear in these initial reports surfacing in media today is whether David’s death was a suicide or an accident, though mainstream media outlets seems to be alluding to the former. It’s a tragic death either way, and I sincerely hope that the hate crime bill proposed in David’s name by Houston-area Representative Sheila Jackson Lee — already approved by the House — gets passed in the Senate.
