For all those that blame all the problems of the world on “illegal” immigration, including documented Latino immigrants, the news that so called “legal” immigrants hoping to be first in line for employer-sponsored green cards lost time and money when the government suddenly announced Monday that no new applications would be taken until the fall doesn’t make the current system look so hot.
The State Department announced last month that employment visa numbers were available for all people seeking employer-sponsored green cards, except unskilled workers. It sometimes takes years for applicants to get those numbers.
The announcement meant that as early as Monday, Citizenship and Immigration Services would begin accepting applications. The applications are hefty, requiring medical exams, a lot of documentation and the applicant’s presence in the United States.
But an update on the State Department Web site posted Monday said 60,000 such numbers were no longer available because of “the sudden backlog reduction efforts by Citizenship and Immigration Services offices during the past month.”
The department called the backlog reduction an “unexpected action” and said employment visa numbers would be available again Oct. 1.

Shakira ain’t a fool. As rumors swirl around her relationship with bf Antonio de la Rua being on the rocks, it has been revealed that when she entered into the relationship, she made sure Antonio wouldn’t be making off with her cash:
“The separation was denied, but it was discovered that a few years ago they agreed to sign papers to cover two possible scenarios: that they get married or stay in a unmarried relationship,” according to the Bogota magazine Semana. The magazine says that both “contributed to the conjugal relationship — or the parental relationship — whichever the case will be, a symbolic sum of $20,000.”
With that, according to Semana, each one of keeps their own wealth “no matter what happen in the future”.
Somehow I feel like this was to protect Shaki, and not Antonio, who mean, gossipy people refer to as “el mantenido” (“the kept man”).

It’s not like he really went anywhere, but Andres Manuel López Obrador, the controversial leftist candidate defeated in Mexico’s very controversial presidential elections is back on the scene. He and his followers are marking the one-year anniversary of the elections by taking to the streets of Mexico City to protest President Felipe Calderon’s presidency:
The march ended with a speech by López Obrador in the Zócalo, center of the Mexican capital, in which the leader of the PRD asked that the deputies and senators of the opposition united and reject the fiscal reform proposed by government, according to Mexican Daily El Universal.“It must be understood that we are opposing just to oppose. The right thing to do in our case is to not adhere to whatever the right-wing government’s policies are. Zero negotiation,” he said.
While “zero negotiation” may be his policy, but AMLO was quickly forced to end his protest of the elections when Mexico City’s citizens began complaining of all the congestion his “plantones” were causing. As for his attempts at a “parallel government”, I’d like to know how that’s going.
