Fox News thinks bloggers are evil

9:32 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Blogs|Media · 2 Comments

And Bill O’Reilly thinks bloggers are “radical Internet assassins”. Have a laugh with this collection of asinine Fox News soundbites, then bask in the guilty pleasure of being a reader of such an evil publication, just another a “vicious far left website”.

Mexico City approves first conjugal visit for a gay prisoner

31 Jul 2007

reos_N.jpgIn yet another example of the steps towards a more progressive society in Mexico’s capital city, gay prisoners are now allowed to have conjugal visits like their heterosexual counterparts. Mexico’s La Jornada reports:

For the first time, a gay prisoner was allowed to exercise his right to intimate visits in a prison in Mexico City, after the Human Rights Commission of Federal District (CDHDF) gave the recommendation on February 8th of last year. [The recommendation] was derived from a complaint by Mr. Agustín N., who said he was denied intimate visits with his partner, a prisoner, at the Santa Marta Acatitla prison on multiple occasions. This was called out by the CDHDF as a violation of the rights of prisoners and of the right to not be discriminated against because of sexual orientation.

A Year Without Fidel (Well Not Really)

9:57 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Cuba|Politics · Comments Off

31 Jul 2007

fidel.jpgIt’s been a year since an ailing Fidel Castro handed day to day Cuban ruling power to his lil hermanito, Raul. The Cuban exile community partied in the streets thinking el barbudo to be dead or near dead and the U.S. made plans on what to do with a post-Fidel Cuba. But the parties and speculation didn’t last long as Fidel recovered from a still mysterious intestinal operation (yes yes we know commenter- you think its Crohn’s) Fidel has been representing more than ever, even if not publicaly.

1185727789_extras_ladillos_1_0.jpgA mother and daughter from Ecuador who had been living in Belgium without papers for 4 years were about to get on a plane bound for Quito, but after a grassroots campaign which brought to light charges of abuse, a Belgian judge decided to halt the deportation order.

Judge Moris said this Monday that the arrest of Angélica, who spent 29 days with her mother in a closed center for the undocumented, caused her “trauma which constitutes inhumane and degrading treatment” which violates Article 3 of the European Human Rights Convention.

The family’s lawyer, Selma ben Khelifa, had presented as evidence a psychological report dated July 5, another from the 19th and the conclusions of the child’s defender, Claude Lelièvre, who last week asked that the deportation order be nullified.

You’ve been served: $1.49 for tap water

4:13 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Food|Marketing · 1 Comment

AquafinaOnIce.gifPepsiCo punked you. That wonderful spring water you’ve been paying a buck fifty for is the same stuff that comes out of your kitchen sink:

A group called Corporate Accountability International has been pressuring bottled water sellers to curb what it calls misleading marketing practices. The group has criticized PepsiCo over its blue Aquafina label with a mountain logo as perpetuating the misconception that the water comes from spring sources.

Aquafina is the single biggest bottled water brand, and its bottles are now labeled “P.W.S.” The new labels will spell out “public water source.”

Of course, PepsiCo says they never called it “spring water”, but somehow the image of glacial mountains on the label doesn’t make me think of the centuries-old San Francisco municipal water system.

As for Aquafina’s competitor, Coca Cola’s Dasani, it’s also good old tap water, but they will not be changing the label.

obamaclinton.jpgThe debate between Democratic presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama has now shifted to if, when, and under what circumstances would either one meet with so-called “dictators” of other nations (read leaders of enemy states of the U.S.) such as Hugo Chavez and the leadership of Cuba. The Clinton camp is accusing the Obama camp of flip-flopping on its position regarding meeting with these leaders (also Iran, North Korea, Syria).

29 Jul 2007

This Mexican film, released here in the U.S. on July 11th, seems like an interesting interweaving of tales Amores Perros style plus Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna are on board as executive producers. That was enough for me to lay down some cash this weekend to see DramaMex.

A New New York Latino Newspaper?

10:42 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · New York City|Newspapers · 1 Comment

28 Jul 2007

24horas.jpgWith ImpreMedia’s buying of Hoy, NYC readers of Spanish language news have two newspapers (the other being el Diario/La Prensa) published by the same people. 24 Horas wants to change all that.

24 Horas promises “trendy design, relevant content and excellence in distribution” the debut edition of 24 Horas is scheduled to appear near me. Why me specifically? Well according to Tricom Media, I am their target market.

“24 Horas is catered to the New Latino. An educated and hard working individual with limited time to read the news and can afford to spend an average of 20 minutes either online or reading the paper in order to be informed or entertained” Said Eddie Cruz, Publisher and Founder of Tricom Media.

So why haven’t I seen it in print yet?

bigot.jpgIn what many local media are describing as a “high-noon standoff”, at least three rallies about immigration are slated to take place tomorrow in Morristown, New Jersey. The events were spurred by the actions of Mayor Donald Cresitello, who sent a letter to the Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) division, hoping to get 10 local police officers deputized as immigration agents, under the federal 287-G program. The officers would be given access to a database to inquire about the individuals’ immigration status and start deportation proceedings on illegal immigrants. One rally is being led by an organization named ProAmerica Society and will feature the mayor, 9/11 Families for Secure America, the Ku Klux Klan, and Stormfront (a white nationalist organization).
