diazperu-cp-201618.jpgCameron Diaz is saying sorry today for a cultural faux pas related to her choice of purses. Last week she was photographed at Machu Pichu sporting a Maoist-themed bag which stirred up all kinds of emotions:

The voice of Princess Fiona in the animated “Shrek” films visited the Incan city of Machu Picchu in Peru’s Andes on Friday carrying an olive green bag emblazoned with a red star and the words “Serve the People” printed in Chinese, perhaps Chinese Communist leader Mao Zedong’s most famous political slogan.

The bags are marketed as fashion accessories in some world capitals, but in Peru the slogan evokes memories of the Maoist Shining Path insurgency that fought the government in the 1980s and early 1990s in a bloody conflict that left nearly 70,000 people dead.

Immigration Debate Up For Vote Today

11:55 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Immigration|Washington DC · Comments Off

26 Jun 2007

border_fence.jpgIn case you haven’t heard, today the U.S. Senate is set to vote on whether to revive the immigration reform debate. 60 votes are needed to resurrect the bill that Republican hardliners (or hardheads depending on your pov) are calling amnesty. As I’ve reported before, what’s been holding the bill back is a series of amendments presented from both sides of the aisle. One of the most controversial:

A bipartisan amendment by Sens. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, Barack Obama, D-Ill., and Max Baucus, D-Mont., that would change the bill’s new program for weeding out illegal employees from U.S. workplaces.
The amendment would free employers from a mandate to check the identities of all their employees and require them to verify only new workers and those the government has a reason to believe are illegal immigrants. It would allow employees to present any state-issued drivers license as proof of identity, rather than requiring the nationally standardized “REAL ID,” which some states have not adopted.

Juanes says: “Legalize it!”

5:15 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Colombia|Drugs · Comments Off

25 Jun 2007

juanes123.jpgColombian rock superstar Juanes has a message for his country’s government: legalize it! Like many other prominent Colombian figures (Gabo included) Juanes believes that depenalizing drug use and sales could lead to a decline in drug related violence and mafias. According to Spain’s 20 Minutos:

“We have to start thinking about depenalizing some part of this, to try to minimize and weaken this mafia,” said the singer, who clarified that his proposal is for the long term and he admitted that his country still isn’t ready to start that debate.

“It’s been 5 decades of a war that doesn’t end, and it won’t end as long as it’s so productive.”

Expect a lot of pundits both in Colombia and here in the U.S. to have a strong opinion about this idea.

Latin American countries experiencing job growth

2:45 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Argentina|Labor|Latin America|Peru · Comments Off

25 Jun 2007

south-america-map.gifLatin American countries traditionally plagued by unemployment and weak economies are beginning to experience a notable level of job growth, according to Forbes.com’s list of “The World’s Hottest Job Markets”, based on Manpower’s quarterly Global Employment Outlook. The South American countries ranked in the Top 5 for job growth: Peru and Argentina:

Manpower’s quarterly Global Employment Outlook, which surveyed over 50,000 employers across 27 countries, ranked Peru No. 2 and Argentina No. 4 in expected job growth for the July-September quarter. The firm scored each country by subtracting the percentage of companies that said they plan to cut back on workers from the percentage that said they plan to add them. A country where 75% of employers plan to add to their workforces and 25% plan to cut them, for example, scores +50%. Peru rated +48%, while Argentina weighed in at +38%.

Experts say that the rub is in whether or not this growth is sustainable. Number one on the list is Singapore, while the U.S. barely made the ranking, coming in at number 10.

Latinos Represent Their Gay Pride

11:00 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Activism|Events|GLBT|history|New York City · Comments Off

25 Jun 2007

libertyandflag.jpgWhile yesterday officially marked Gay Pride here in NYC, the season kicked off on Sunday, June 3 with the first of the borough festivals, organized by the Queens Lesbian and Gay Pride Committee. The group estimated that 40,000 people attended the 15th Annual Queens LGBT Pride Parade and Festival held in the very Latino hood of Jackson Heights to celebrate and uphold this year’s theme, “United for Equality.” On that day a street, the corner of 77th Street and 33rd Avenue, was named after a local Latino Edgar Garzon, a man murdered in August 2001.

rallies2-in.jpgYesterday, with the news that the U.S. Senate will debate immigration reform (yet again)this week, thousands of people in the Los Angeles area took to the streets to demand comprehensive immigration reform.

Chanting “Si, se puede” which in English means “It can be done” – the crowd began the march at Hollywood Boulevard and Ivar Avenue. It came to an end at a stage set up at Hollywood Boulevard and Orange Drive.

Meanwhile all eyes were on the Los Angeles Police Department following their less than stellar community relations tactics at an earlier pro-immigration rally.

Before the march began, Los Angeles police handed out yellow fliers to passers-by that explained the department’s commitment to participants’ free speech and its goal for a safe atmosphere during demonstrations. Community relations officers wore jackets that identified who they were to the crowd. Police set up media sections around the demonstration, in case mayhem erupted.

Austrailian Big Brother Dissing el Tricolor?

5:15 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · World · Comments Off

22 Jun 2007

bandera-copy.jpgImagine an episode of a Mexican game show where one game invited participants to throw slime filled balloons at a United States flag. Just imagine the outrage, the protests. Well Austraila’s Big Brother contestants threw goo-filled balloons at the Mexican flag as part of their Friday night games.

The incident occurred during the show’s “Mexican Night” challenge with contestants dressed in mariachi outfits playing musical chairs and serving Chili con Carne to win points.

Sounds like one of those racist campus parties, no? Mind you, the flag used displayed the Mexican national symbol – “an eagle devouring a snake on top of a cactus – in the middle but had the green, white and red colors in the wrong order,” according to ABC.AU. Mexican officials were not amused and demanded an apology.

Thalia’s baby to be a gringo

4:02 pm By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Chismes|mexico · Comments Off

22 Jun 2007

thalia.jpgMexican pop star Thalia, also known Mrs. Tommy Mottolla, will give birth to her child in the U.S. for “reasons of safety”, according to her fashion designer, Gustavo Mata:

“The baby will be born outside of Mexico for safety and practical reasons, and also because Thalía is an American citizen and it’s much better for her that it be born there,” said the designer, a longtime friend of the singer.

Thalia can do whatever she wants, but why is it better that it be born here “because she’s an American citizen”? As far as safety is concerned, I guess she’s on guard because of the fact that her sister was kidnapped and Thalia later had to go in and fix the problem.

Ricky Martin gets a star

10:40 am By Jennifer Woodard Maderazo · Celebrities|Entertainment|Music · 1 Comment

22 Jun 2007

martin111606_03.jpgPop tart Ricky Martin will get a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame next year, along with a list of stars from the TV, film and recording industries. How they fit so many stars on that street each year is a mystery to me. Do they “delete” people after a while? Here’s the complete list of who will be honored in 2008:

Movies: Angela Bassett, Cate Blanchett, Tim Robbins, Stan Lee, the Munchkins (from “The Wizard of Oz”) and the Westmores of Hollywood, a longtime show-business makeup family.

Television: Howie Mandel, Susan St. James, Bill Geist, Kate Linder, Howie Mandel, Sherwood Schwartz, Vince McMahon and, posthumously, Brian Keith.

Recording: Brooks & Dunn, Ricky Martin, Christina Aguilera, Red Hot Chili Peppers and, posthumously, George Harrison.

Live theater/performance: Stephen Schwartz.

“The Munchkins”? That one’s been a long time in the making — nearly 70 years. Not very PC either.
