bc_060322fastimmigfedbldg5571g_100.jpgAn investigation as to unsafe working conditions at a Del Monte processing plant led to 167 undocumented workers facing possible deportation. On Tuesday feds conducted a raid at the Fresh Del Monte Produce Co. plant near the Portland shipyards. Some of the unsafe conditions found were:

• Electrical extension cords were in standing water, supervisors were not diligent about the cleanliness of vegetables before boxing for shipment, and the employee bathroom and cafeteria were “extremely dirty.”
• There were about 3 inches of cold water on the production-area floor, where most workers wore sneakers or shoes even though they were supposed to be provided with boots.
• Workers were not paid overtime.
• Shift supervisors were constantly yelling at workers and were “extremely rude.”

Unfortunately 167 people now face the lack of safety their families found in a paycheck. Many of those arrested in the raid were mothers who now worry about their future as breadwinners and their ability to stay in the U.S. with their children.

Bush and Latinos Pray for Immigration Reform

bigheadbush.jpgThis morning President Bush gathered with Latino religious and political leaders to do one of his favorite things, pray. At the National Hispanic Prayer Breakfast in Washington D.C., Bush was especially praying to get immigration reform back on the Congressional agenda. He said:

Each day our nation fails to act, the problem only grows worse. I will continue to work closely with members of both parties, to get past our differences, and pass a bill I can sign this year.We must meet our moral obligation to treat newcomers with decency and show compassion to the vulnerable and exploited, because we’re called to answer both the demands of justice and the call for mercy. Most Americans agree on these principles, and now it’s time for our elected leaders in Congress to act.

albanomakeup.jpgVia a reader tip who pointed us to a post on PerezHilton.com, Jessica Alba had a lot to say about her Mexican heritage, and none of it good. Here’s a short excerpt:

“I’ve got cousins galore. Mexicans just spread all their seeds. And the women just pop them out.”

“My grandfather was the only Mexican at his college, the only Hispanic person at work and the only one at the all-white country club. He tried to forget his Mexican roots, because he never wanted his kids to be made to feel different in America. He and my grandmother didn’t speak Spanish to their children. Now, as a third-generation American, I feel as if I have finally cut loose.”

Wow, one more reason to hate her. Not sure where Perez got his info, but if this is true, I hope it alienates all of her Latino/a fans.

There are actually a couple more “enlightened” comments she makes on her cultural shame in his complete post. Check it out.

“Sicko” leaked on the web

OB-AK641_sicko_20070514135227.jpgThings are getting more complicated for director Michael Moore. Earlier this week we told you that Moore feared that the U.S. government was out to get his new movie about the American health care system, Sicko, in an apparent attempt to stop the movie from being seen. Well, neither the government’s nor Moore’s own efforts seem to have worked, as the movie is already beeing shared on peer-to-peer internet sites, reports AdAge today:

If the breach is as wide as it appears — and this reporter downloaded a copy and watched it late Thursday night with ease — Moore, and his distributor, The Weinstein Company, have a every film maker’s worst marketing nightmare on their hands — how to persuade people to go to the theater to see a show that’s available free on the Internet. (Officials at the Weinstein Company were unavailable for comment late Thursday evening.)

Sicko is slated to open in the U.S. on June 29th, and was expected to pull in a lot of moviegoers for its premiere. What remains to be seen is whether the appearance of this pirated copy will impact ticket sales.

In a related story, Sicko marketers and nurses’ associations have banded together and plan to have nurses at every theatre for the premiere as a way to engage audiences in the ongoing conversation about health care in the U.S.
