Schwarzenegger: Latinos Need to Stop Watching Spanish TV

schwarzenegger.jpgCalifornia governor Arnold Schwarzenegger isn’t known for his speaking well of Latinos but he was given a chance to clarify his position on key issues like immigration yesterday at the National Association of Hispanic Journalists‘ 25th anniversary convention. The governator didn’t disapoint drawing gasps when he said that Latino immigrants need to stop watching Spanish language t.v.

“I know it sounds odd, and I may be getting myself in trouble for saying this,” Schwarzenegger said before launching into a retelling of his own struggle to master English. “I got rid of the television set and learned.”He added: “Even in the state capital, so many Latinos speak Spanish all the time.”

Those present said they were shocked by Schwarznegger’s words, especially given his audience.

I say, what did people expect? Arnie vetoed a bill that would allow undocumented immigrants the right to drive, has made racist and stereotypical statements about Latinos, and said Mexicans don’t want to assimilate. Not exactly a great track record. And seriously, what kind of a message did the NAHJ expect? I’m just surprised that they didn’t invite their pal Lou Dobbs to speak.

Latinos do need to stop and learn English. That does not mean they give up Spanish media forever though…DUH… Learn the language of the country you are living in…. I vote no for undocumented immigrants driving too, JESUS, they cant speak or read/write the language, but they want to drive?!? NO WAY – this is not Mexico, Cuba or Columbia, this is AMERICA, learn the language!!!
I was born in the US of immigrants, and I was not aloud to speak spaish in the house until I learned english… I am sorry, but suck it up and learn the language!

He’s right, its about time somebody said it. Learning English and assimilating doesn’t mean you lose your heritage or culture, it means you become part of America
