The first Latino to run for president, Bill Richardson, visited the San Francisco Bay Area today, and made an appearance at the Mexican Heritage Plaza in San Jose in an apparent attempt to formally begin courting Latino voters. The San Jose Mercury News reports that while the “venue was perfect, the audience was not”, since Richardson’s greeting of the crowd in Spanish wasn’t understood by those in attendance — non-Latino members of the Silicon Valley Commonwealth Club. Oh, well.
My question is whether Richardson’s playing up of his heritage — which would obviously help bolster Latino support if her were nominated — will actually help him get Democrats to make him their man, or instead hurt his chances. In contrast, neither Clinton nor Obama seems to be playing up their gender or race.
