The first Latino to run for president, Bill Richardson, visited the San Francisco Bay Area today, and made an appearance at the Mexican Heritage Plaza in San Jose in an apparent attempt to formally begin courting Latino voters. The San Jose Mercury News reports that while the “venue was perfect, the audience was not”, since Richardson’s greeting of the crowd in Spanish wasn’t understood by those in attendance — non-Latino members of the Silicon Valley Commonwealth Club. Oh, well.
My question is whether Richardson’s playing up of his heritage — which would obviously help bolster Latino support if her were nominated — will actually help him get Democrats to make him their man, or instead hurt his chances. In contrast, neither Clinton nor Obama seems to be playing up their gender or race.

Last week we told you that Alberto Fujimori, the controversial ex-president of Peru, might be extradited from Chile back to his country. Much is being said about how fair a trial Fujimori could get in a country where he is hated by so many, but the Peruvian government is attempting to put those fears to rest.
Peru’s prime minister, Jorge del Castillo, reiterated today that ex-president Alberto Fujimori will have a “fair” trial “without interferences” from the governement if he is extradited to the country and reminded [reporters] that “the ball is in the Chilean justice system’s court right now.”
Del Castillo is referring to the fact that Chile has still not decided whether they will send Fujimori back to his home country. The extradition was first requested by Peru in January of 2006, and current President Alan Garcia‘s administration has been accused of not doing enough to get Fujimori processed.

In an effort to revive his pretty much dead immigration reform plan, President Bush is looking to people like VL, bloggers that is, and others.
The White House has done outreach to liberal religious and Hispanic groups and, at the suggestion of chief political strategist Karl Rove, made more use of the blogosphere on immigration than it has on any issue since President Bush took office, aides said.
No one from Bush’s office has contacted us (gee I wonder why?)

While the NYPD tries to explain to the city and parade organizers why they arrested 208 people at the Fifth Avenue parade, Police in the Hudson Valley city of Newburgh did some arresting of their own. Police say they arrested four people, charging them with disorderly conduct and inciting a riot during a street party held after Sunday’s Puerto Rican Day Parade in Manhattan. Police claim that party goers attacked them while witnesses say that women and children were pepper sprayed, and cameras which videotaped the police were confiscated.
