Michael Moore is spooked. After receiving a friendly letter from the U.S. Department of Treasury in response to his trip to Cuba to film his latest doxposé, Sicko, Moore thinks the government might attempt to confiscate his film, so he’s left a copy in Canada:
“We brought back 15 minutes of the movie and we’re concerned about any possible confiscation efforts,” Moore told a news conference in New York.

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell doesn’t want to shut down the entire US military base in “enemy” Cuba, just the messy military prison in Guantanamo Bay. On television yesterday, Powell said the jail, known for its torture and holding of individuals on no charges, should close “not tomorrow but this afternoon”. And what of the prisoners there now? Powell said they should be transferred to prisons in the U.S. He also called for the abolition of the military tribunal system, saying terror suspects should face trial under existing US federal laws. Currently there are about 380 detainees aka “enemy combatants” in Guantanamo Bay prison, not subject to normal US court rules.

Senate Democrats couldn’t get their act together on immigration reform but they plan to hold a no-confidence vote today on Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. The move is strictly a symbolic one, although it will force Republicans to state on the record whether Gonzales should keep his job. The resolution is unlikely to survive the test vote today and Most Republicans are likely to vote no, dismissing the whole exercise as a ploy to embarrass President Bush. Not that Bush needs help there. Bush said:
They can have their votes of no-confidence but it’s not going to make the determination about who serves in my government. This process has been drug out a long time. … It’s political.
Drug out? Was he drugged out when he said that?

I confess, I sometimes watch the Food Network. And with the exception of very few shows (one of which has been cancelled), I consider it trash. The kind of trash you want to watch again and again, and at various times of the day, religiously. In watching a whole lot of the Food Network, I noticed that there are very few people of color on the channel, and the few that are there are relegated to the deadly early morning or late night hours. Up until now — and in spite of the fact that Latin America boasts some of the most diverse and awe-inspiring cuisines in the world — there was no Latino representation on the Food Network, but that’s history now:
Ingrid Hoffmann has been tempting Spanish-language audiences by cooking traditional food with a modern twist and offering common-sense tips for entertaining. Now she wants to translate that recipe into English. With her new show “Simply Delicioso,” airing Saturdays at 11:30 a.m. beginning July 14, the Colombian-born Miami resident becomes the Food Network’s first Latina host. Already known to Spanish TV watchers through her cable show Delicioso on Galavision and segments on Univision’s Despierta America, Hoffman will join the ranks of other Spanish-language stars who have tried to cross over to English – not always successfully.
Indeed, not always successfully.
Check out a video of the new food diva here and tell us what you think. Does she stand a fighting chance on the Food Network?
