Brazilian model Gisele Bundchen is speaking out against the comments around condom use made by the Pope on his recent visit to her country:
“To prohibit condoms is ridiculous, just think of all the diseases transmitted without them,” the 26-year-old supermodel told the newspaper. She added: “How is it possible to not want people to use condoms and also not have abortions? It’s impossible, I’m sorry.”
The outspoken Gisele had previously stirred up controversy when she placed the blame for the deaths of Latin American models from eating disorders on the women’s families.
Gisele’s views on condom use and birth control seem to be shared by many of her countrymen, among them, the president of Brazil, Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, who recently defied the Pope’s warnings.

Ex-president of Peru, Alberto Fujimori, will be placed under house arrest in Chile, at the order of a Chilean judge. The Peruvian government had expressed fears that the ex-leader might flee the country:
Those fears were fueled on Thursday when a Chilean state prosecutor submitted a report to the Supreme Court recommending his extradition. The report will be passed to Judge Orlando Alvarez, who must decide whether Fujimori should be sent to Peru, which accuses him of embezzling $15 million and using excessive anti-terrorism measures during his 1990-2000 presidency.
According to Reuters, Fujimori says he has no intention of fleeing the country, and is “calmly” waiting the decision on his fate. Expect major uproar if he does get sent back to Peru.

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) has had a nasty habit of following Puerto Rican Parade goers back to their hoods and harassing and revelers. Some activists have likened what happens to military type occupations and note that such things don’t occur after other ethnic parades. For example in communities such as Sunset Park in Brooklyn, aggressive confrontations of police officers included an 8 yr. old girl shoved onto a gate in June of 2004 and teenage girls maced, chocked and manhandled by officers from the 72nd precinct.

I predicted that nothing would come out of the current immigration reform numerous times (personally because I don’t think Congress really gives a damn) and Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat, officially withdrew the so-called compromise bill from the Senate floor. Part of the reason for the failure (besides a lack of real will) was the debate over some 40 amendments including one Democratic proposal to limit a guest-worker program sought by business interests and backed by Republicans. The bill could come back up sometime this year (but I bet it won’t until we get closer to presidential election day).

Artist and legend Frida Kahlo celebrates her 100th birthday this year and Mexico City is set to celebrate her with the largest-ever exhibit of her paintings at the Palacio de Bellas Artes. The 354 pieces displayed include one-third of her artistic production, manuscripts, and fifty personal letters never before displayed in public. The exhibit is tentatively slated to open June 13, 2007 until August 19, 2007, just in time for summer travel.
